REGULAR MEETING/ JUDGE APPOINTMENT
AUGUST 20, 2019
4:00 P.M.
Present were; Board Chairman Tony Spears, Secretary Joey Powell, Members: Steve Blackburn,
Betsy McCormick and Lin Coker
Also Present were; Director Claire Jones and Deputy Director Claudette Williams
Mr. Spears called the meeting to order at 4:00pm with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Minutes:
The Board reviewed the minutes from July 2, 2019. Mr. Blackburn moved to approve the
minutes. Mr. Coker seconded. Approved without dissent.
Business:
The Board reviewed the list of Appointed Judges submitted by Mrs. Jones, attached hereto. The
Board discussed rules, requirements and deficiencies concerning the lists submitted by the Party
Chairs. Mrs. Jones and Ms. Williams supplemented the list with past judges and others capable
of performing the duties. After some discussion, Mr. Powell moved to accept the Appointed
Judge list. Mrs. McCormick seconded. Approved without dissent.
Mr. Powell moved to enter into closed session to discuss a personnel issue. Mr. Coker seconded.
Approved without dissent. The Board went into closed session at 4:16.
Mr. Blackburn moved to return to open session. Mrs. McCormick seconded. Approved without
dissent. The Board returned at 4:28. No action was taken as a result of closed session.
After examining the calendar, Mr. Powell moved to merge the regular meeting on September 3,
2019 with the Absentee meeting on September 17, 2019. Mr. Blackburn seconded. Approved
without dissent. The date for both meetings will be September 17, at 5:00pm.
Mrs. Jones also reported to the Board:
• Ballot proofing has begun for the October Elections
• Election Notices were posted to the website and newspaper
• Precinct worker training is being prepared
• Voter ID seminars are August 20 and 22 at 6:00pm
• Jeni Harris passed her certification exam
With no further business to discuss, Mr. Powell moved to adjourn. Mr. Coker seconded. The
meeting was adjourned at 4:37 pm.
The next meeting of the Board will be a Regular and Absentee meeting on September 17, 2019 at
5:00 pm.
