MEETING MINUTES
July 16, 2013
12:00 P.M.
Present were incoming Board Members; James Currin, Tony Spears, Joseph Powell and Director
Claire Jones.
Also present were Claudette Williams, Elections Specialist/Deputy, Marsha Johnson, Clerk of
Court, Republican Chairwoman Maggie Sandrock, Democratic Chairwoman Teresa Sloan-
Oudeh, Carolyn McDougal and Tom Woerner.
Mr. Currin called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm.
Business:
The Board Members were introduced and sworn in by Marsha Johnson, Harnett County Clerk of
Court. Mr. Powell moved to nominate Mr. Currin as Chairman. Mr. Spears seconded. Approved
without dissent. Mr. Currin moved to nominate Mr. Spears as secretary. Mr. Powell seconded.
Approved without dissent. Mr. Powell moved to approve the Elections Director's duties. Mr.
Spears seconded. Approved without dissent.
Ms. Jones then gave each board member a law book, an election calendar and a copy of a memo
by SBOE pertaining to county board members not holding political positions and the N.C. Open
Meetings law.
Ms. Jones informed the board of other business of importance such as:
- Lane Gregory inquiring about a Grove township election to be held November 5, 2013.
- Commissioners proposing a quarter percent sales tax either on the ballot this year or in
2014.
- 2013-2014 budget; purchase of laptops was denied, part time staffing cost reduced.
- Municipal filing dates July 5th (noon) - July 19th (noon)
- August 15th Poll worker list due from party chairs
- August 20th board votes on appointments of poll workers
Mr. Currin asked Mrs. Jones to explain the use of One Stop laptops vs. Poll books. Mrs. Jones
stressed less human error and more accuracy for reasons of using laptops.
Mr. Powell moved to Adjourn. Mr. Spears seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 12:37 pm.
The next meeting of the Board is August 20, 2013 4:00p.m.
