ABSENTEE MEETING MINUTES
r- June 12, 2007
5:00 P.M.
Present were Chairman William Randall, Roy Tew, Secretary and Walter Massey,
Member.
Also present was Sherre Toler, Director.
Mr. Randall called the meeting to order at 5:10 p.m.
Minutes:
Mr. Massey moved to approve the minutes of May 29, 2007. Mr. Randall
seconded. Approved without dissent. Mr. Tew moved to approve the minutes of June 5,
2007. Mr. Massey seconded. Approved without dissent.
New Business:
Ms. Toler presented the board with the poll book of absentee voters through June
12, 2007 at 5:00 p.m, attached hereto and incorporated herein. Mr. Massey moved to
approve those ballots. Mr. Tew seconded. Approved without dissent.
Ms. Toler advised that one absentee by mail had been returned undeliverable.
The Board discussed the proposed grant from the state board regarding
laptops/electronic pollbooks. Mr. Tew expressed concern that poll workers would be
unable to use the new system. Additionally, he expressed concern that the method kept
changing and would result in more confusion for poll workers. Ms. Toler advised that it
is a potential problem not having enough technologically trained poll workers to use the
laptops, but the system is extremely easy to use. Further, as county employees may be
utilized to fill in any vacancies there may be more benefits to using the system than not.
The proposed grant for Harnett County will be $39,000, The total cost is approximately
$55,000.00. Following discussion, Mr. Massey moved to approve the purchase of the
laptops/printers for the entire county. Mr. Tew seconded the Motion. Mr. Randall and
Mr. Massey voted in favor of the motion. Mr. Tew voted in opposition to the motion.
Motion carried.
Ms. Toler advised that staff worked out a hands-on training session for poll
workers for this evening.
The Board discussed going to the precincts on election day.
The next meeting of the board will be the absentee meeting on June 19, 2007 at
5:00 p.m.
' Mr. Massey moved to recess until the poll worker training session. Mr. Tew
seconded. The meeting was recessed at approximately 5:40 p.m. At 6:00 p.m. Mr.
Randall called the poll worker training session to order. Training followed. The meeting
was adjourned at 9:15 pm.
