This report documents the work performed by Froehling & Robertson, Inc. (F &R) on the above
referenced project. This report summarizes the site observations and the foundation bearing material
evaluation services performed on October 5, 2010.
Foundation Bearing Material Evaluation
On the above date, F &R Engineering Staff Member Todd Davis evaluated the near surface foundation
bearing materials for the proposed residence at the above referenced project site. The exposed
subgrade soils were evaluated by first performing a visual observation and then performing hand auger
borings with Dynamic Cone Penetrometer tests (DCP).
Four hand auger borings (HA -1 through HA -4) with Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests were
performed to estimate the soil strength and relative density of the near - surface bearing materials, and
to evaluate their suitability for foundation support. The approximate test location and soil conditions
encountered are indicated on the "Record of Hand Auger Borings ".

The DCP test procedure involves first seating the conical point of the penetrometer 2 inches into the
bearing materials to assure that the conical point is completely embedded. The conical point is then
driven in 1% -inch increments using a 15 -pound weight falling from a height of 20 inches. The
penetrometer reading is the number of blows required to drive the conical point 1'% inches. Typically,
the conical point is then driven an additional increment of 1% inches and the average penetrometer
readings are recorded. When properly evaluated, the penetrometer test results can provide an index
for estimating soil strength and relative density.
Findings
The hand auger borings were extended into coastal plain soils. The soils generally consisted of loose
silty SANDS having average DCP readings of 6 to 10 blows per 1 % inch increment (bpi). The hand auger
borings were terminated at a depth of approximately 3 feet below the foundation bearing elevation.
Evaluation
Based on the results of the hand auger borings and dynamic cone penetrometer tests performed, the
existing subgrade soils at the tested locations are suitable for support of the proposed residence
foundation which requires a net allowable bearing capacity of 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf).
Exposure of the subgrade materials to the environment may weaken these soils at the foundation
bearing level. If the foundation excavation remains open for long periods of time, or during inclement
weather, re- evaluation of the subgrade materials by a geotechnical staff professional may be required
prior to steel and concrete placement. We recommend that the footings be concreted as soon as
possible after the evaluation to minimize potential disturbance of the bearing soils. The foundation
bearing area should be free of very loose or soft materials, ponded water and debris. Concrete should
not be placed on soils that have been softened by precipitation. If the subgrade soils must remain
exposed during inclement weather, we recommend that a two to four inch thick "mud -mat" of lean
2,000 psi concrete be placed on the bearing soils.
