0607195432� June 7th. 1954 The Board of County Commissioners of Harnett County met in regular session on Monday June 7th. 1954, at 9:00 A.M., with all members present. The County Attorney, the Clerk to Board, and the Auditor were also present. The report of D. P. Ray, Jr. Tax Collector, was approved and ordered filed. The report of Robert Morgan, Clerk Superior Court, was approved and ordered filed. The report of Inez Harrington, Register of Deeds, was approved and ordered filed. The report of L. B. McLean, Veteran Service Officer, was approved and ordered filed. The report of Roy Godwin, County Electrical Inspector, was approved and ordered filed. The following road petitions were approved and placed on file: (1) To hard surface that road in Grove Township, which runs from if 55 at Henry Turlington's to intersection of Brick Mill road on the Coats to Buie's Creek road and is known as the Turlington and Sorrell road and is 2 -4/10 miles. To gravel and maintain that certain road in hick River Township which leads from Angier- Buie's Creek Road to Reardon Road a distance of 8/10 miles.(petition mailed to C.A. Hasty 6 -9) To surface and rade that road from the g present surfaced road at Bar Room old field near S. H. Ross farm to Cypress Church a distance of 3 miles. Commissioner Mangum moved, seconded by Commissioner Ingram, that the License Tax schedule for the year 1954 -55, be the same as the 1953 -54. Motion carried Herbert D. Carson, Jr., County Auditor, was appointed to collect pre - payment taxes for the year 1954 and ordered to deposit the daily receipts in the county depository, First Citizens Bank & Trust Co, Dunn, N. C. The Board ordered the County Offices closed July 3rd. and July 5th. for the Holidays. Commissioner Lasater introduced the following resolution which was read: WHEREAS Harnett County has recently lost one of its most outstanding citizens in the death of Mr. W. E. Nichols, who for many years has devoted his time and energy, both as a public official and private citizen, to the betterment of Harnett County; And, WHEREAS,_ The Board of County Commissioners desire to publicly express their keen sense of loss in the death of Mr. Nichols, and also to extend to his family and relatives sympathy in their hour of bereavement; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County that said County has lost one of its most outstanding and useful citizens in the death of Mr. Nichols, and further that the Board of County Commissioners does hereby extend to Mr. Nichols' family its sympathy; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be furnished to Mr. Nichols' family and to the press of Harnett County. Upon motion of Commissioner Lasater, seconded by Commissioner Byrd, the foregoing Resolution was unanimously adopted..
