01091967JANUARY 9th. 1967 The Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Monday, January 9th. with Chairman M. H. Brock, Commissioner Womble, Commissioner Brown, Commission Cotton and Commissioner McLamb present. Also present were the County Attorney, the County Auditor and the Clerk to the Board. Commissioner Brock called the meeting to order and presided. Commissioner Womble offered the invocation. Commissioner McLamb read the minutes of the December meeting which were approved. Matthews Kyle Harrington W. Earl Jones Jean M. Irvin L. Perry Cameron B H Sellers Roy Godwin Thomas Allen, Tax Supervisor, appeared before the Board and discussed plans for his office. The Board ordered that James Hubert Ryals, Upper Little River Township, Lillington Rt. 2 be exempted from Poll Tax due to physical disability. Upon advice of Thpmas Allen that an additional List Taker was needed in Averasboro Twp. the Board named Mrs. Hank Curran, Dunn, Averasboro Township, as the additional list taker to begin her duties on January 16th. and list through February 15th. The Board extended the tax listing time for property in Harnett County to February 15th. The Board ordered that Lector M. Langdon, Angier, Rt. 2, Black River Township, be refunded $15.47, tax valuation due to error of 1965 assessment, not being in Fire District. The Board ordered that Helena Pittman Porter, Sanford, Rt. 5, be refunded $11.99 due to assessed valuation in 1965, on house burned. Margaret Randall, County Librarian, appeared before the Board, representing the Library Board, and requested fund in amount of $550.00 to provide a new roof on the County Library. Commissioner Cotton moved, seconded by Commissioner Womble, that $550.00 be appropriated for the new roof. Motion carried. The Board ordered that Mrs. Rosa Walborn, Lillington, be paid $50.00 per year for the Dog Pound in Anderson Creek Township. Bill Staton and Jimmy Love, Representatives of Harnett and Lee Counties in the House of Representative, appeared before the Board with Willard Mixon and discussed the Revenue effect of recommendation of the Tax Study Commission. The Board ordered a one step pay raise for Harry Roberts and Bland Fleming, welfare case workers, effective January 1st. 1967, from fund available in the Welfare Department Budget. W. Earl Jones, Tax Collector, appeared before the Board and presented report to the Board and discussed collections. (Petition mailed to Sam Wilson) NORTH CAROLINA HARNETT COUNTY R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Board of County Commissioners that Dr. Leslie H. Campbell is retiring as President of Campbell College; and WHEREAS, by Dr. Campbell's retirement, the distinguished name is removed from educators in North Carolina and particularly in Harnett County. During Dr. Campbell's tenure of office this very fine in- stitution, located at Buie& Creek, has grown to a fully accredited four -year senior college and represents a living memorial to Dr. Campbell and his distinguished father who founded the institution; and WHEREAS, during Dr. Campbell's tenure in office and for the major part of his life he has contributed of his knowledge and energy toward the development of Campbell College and through its influence has mold- ed the lives of countless numbers of young people in eastern North Carolina and particularly in Harnett County; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of Harnett County that it does hereby commend Dr. Campbell for his high type of Christian leadership that has been primarily responsible for providing an institution in which young people, regardless of financial circumstances, might have an opportunity to develop their full potential; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board does hereby wish for Dr. Campbell in his retirement many more active year of association in the religious, educational and civic affairs of our County, our. State and our Nation. The foregoing resolution was offered by Commissioner Cotton and unanimously adopted.
