2010/02/08 RESOLUTION BOY SCOUT OF AMERICA CELEBRATES THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FORMATIONRESOLUTION WHEREAS, the Boy Scout of America celebrates the 100'" Anniversary of its formation on February 8, 2010; WHEREAS, throughout its history, the Boy Scouts of America has provided training to youth in leadership development, service to others, and civic responsibility; WHEREAS, numerous youth in our county have participated in the Scouting program through the years, becoming accomplished leaders both past and present; and WHEREAS, Boy Scouts have performed a variety of valuable service projects throughout our county and its communities; WHEREAS, a National study has shown that youth who participate in Boy Scouts five or more years have: ✓ improved performance in reading, science, math and physical fitness; ✓ higher percentage of attendance to colleges and universities; • obtained higher paying jobs; • better ethical decision making; and ✓ higher attendance at religious services with their family; WHEREAS, the National study has also shown that adults who were in Boy Scouts as a youth have: ✓ Stated that Scouting had a positive influence on their lives as a youth and adult; ✓ Learned positive character traits such as a being a good team player, always being honest, taking better care of the environment, respecting life and property of others; having pride in their country, respecting the elderly and having confidence in their abilities. We promise you a very exciting experience and know you are honored to have been chosen by your council to represent Your county in this historic event. In preparation of this celebration, there are a few items I need you and your parents to accomplish. We will be providing one complimentary hotel room per participating Scout. You may receive your complimentary room by contacting Sandra Hughes Benton, Director of Marketing, Summit Hospitality Group, Ltd. at (919) 455 -2757. Any other rooms that are requirec will be given the discounted rate that is on the attached flyer and can be made by contacting the hotels directly. You need to plan to arrive in Raleigh by 5:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, February 7, and you will checkout of your hotel on Monday morning before we meet downtown. We are very excited that all 100 counties will be represented, and we are asking you to request your county's flag (and stand) to be used in our presentation. Scout's from the Order of the Arrow will be coordinating the flag ceremony and will ensure that you pick -up your county flag on Monday when the ceremonies and tours are complete. We have confirmed that the Honorable Governor, Beverly Purdue and her husband, Bob Eaves, will be in attendance at our celebration. You and the Scouts from your council are going to have a photo opportunity with the Governor, so we want you to been in full and proper field uniform for this occasion. Please make sure your uniform is correct before you come to Raleigh. The Anniversary Celebration is scheduled to begin Sunday evening with a special Scout Vespers Service. We have enclosed a map and address of Greystone Baptist Church which is located just a few miles from the hotels. Please plan to arrive at the church by 7:00 pm and wear your uniform. We do plan to have refreshments available before and after the service. Immediately following the service, we will share our complete plans for the activities that will take place on Monday, including a map and directions to several parking areas near the Capital.
