11:30 a.m.
Present were Chairman Walter Massey, Secretary James Currin, and member Louise Taylor.
Also present was Ted Halstead, Elections Director.
Chairman Massey called the meeting to order at 11:30 a.m.
Business:
Mr. Currin moved to approve the minutes from the November 16 meeting. Mrs. Taylor
seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.
Mr. Halstead advised the Board of a suggestion reported in The Daily Record made by the new
chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Jim Burgin, to reinstate identical districts for county
commission and school board commission elections. Chairman Massey noted that no action on
this suggestion would be appropriate until it was made directly to the Board of Elections, and the
other board members agreed.
Mrs. Taylor suggested that it would be useful to explore the idea of reinstating a polling place at
Buies Creek, if a suitable location could be made available without cost to the County. Mrs.
Taylor also suggested that Dr. John Roberson, executive assistant to the President of Campbell
University, would be a good point of contact for this effort. Mr. Halstead agreed to contact Dr.
Roberson prior to the Board's next meeting.
Mrs. Taylor noted that she had observed some voters experiencing delays in entering the limited
parking available at the Board of Elections headquarters building during early voting on
Saturdays, and suggested that a poll worker be assigned for this purpose. If no poll worker was
available, Mr. Currin suggested that the Board consider hiring an off -duty police officer for this
purpose. Mr. Halstead agreed to look into appropriate remedial steps for parking prior to the
next General Election.
Mr. Currin underlined the importance of switching from poll books to laptops prior to the next
election, and said that he had raised this issue with members of the Board of Commissioners,
The other board members agreed that switching from poll books to laptops should be a high
priority. Mr. Halstead thanked the Board for their support of this project.
Chairman Massey congratulated the Board and the Board of Elections staff for their hard work
over the past year, and noted that we had been able to provide excellent service for voters during
a record turnout for the 2012 General Election.
