HomeMy WebLinkAboutNO Drakes Landing-JonesTo the Harnett County Board of Adjustments,
I am writing in regard to the upcoming hearing on Drake Landing's appeal.
I live in the Kinnis Creek subdivision off of James Norris Rd. I moved here from Raleigh in 1999 to be closer to my parents and to get away from an increasingly congested area. At that
time it was an extremely peaceful existence. I enjoyed being able to go outside and work or play in my yard, listening to the birds and generally just feeling safe. That all changed
when Drake Landing started operation. I couldn't go outside without hearing constant gunfire. I grew even more concerned in 2011 when I found out through an article in the News & Observer
as well as a Living Social promotion that they were partnering with Aviator Brewery. The thought that people would be shooting firearms and drinking was very scary. I believe that the
plan was not to have anyone partake before they got to the range, but how were they going to insure that everyone complied? I pet sit and one of clients lives off of HWY 401, in getting
to her home I go down Chalybeate Springs Rd., and I have to drive past Drake Landing. It was somewhat concerning driving past the range as you can see, on one side what I call the killing
fields-several deer stands surrounding an open field, clearly visible from the road and on the other side the shooting range, it just seems to close to the road. I admit that I'm glad
I don't live any closer as it would be a nightmare having to listen to the constant gunfire and feeling like I'm in a warzone. As it is, since Drake Landing has been in operation, I've
noticed an increase in gunfire and explosions closer to my home, people seem to feel that if it is okay for people to fire weapons at Drake Landing, then they can fire weapons or set
off explosions any where in the woods outside of the town limits.I no longer feel safe spending time outside as I don't know where the gunfire is coming from and it sounds way too close.
And while Drake Landing may bring in some visitors from outside the county, they are only here for the day, the rest of us are here 24/7 and we all pay property and sales taxes. It doesn't
seem fair to rest of us that we suffer from noise pollution or if you live nearby, the fear that you or your loved ones might be hit by a stray shot.
As a resident of Harnett County, I have high hopes that the Board will take in consideration all of the residents of the County, not just a few.
Sincerely,
Kathy Jones
