My name is Mike Smith, and I’m a resident of Holly Springs, NC and a member and frequent patron of Drake Landing. I’m writing to you in support of Drake Landing concerning the repeal
of their Agri-tourism zoning exemption and the conditional use permit that Harnett County has asked them to apply for. I will unfortunately not be able to attend the public hearing tomorrow
night due to work conflicts, but would like to send this email in support of Drake Landing, in the hopes that Harnett County will grant this temporary permit and eventually re-instate
their Agri-tourism status.
My interest in sporting clays competitions and the collection of classic American made double guns has taken me up and down the east coast to venues from Rhode Island down to South Carolina.
In all my travels, I have never run across a finer sporting clays facility than Drake Landing, and certainly not one that is better managed. Dan Andrews and his staff have treated me
like family since my first visit years ago, and have continued to do so every weekend since. I have a young son that I’m introducing to the sport, and gun safety is of the upmost importance
to me. I would not support nor frequent any establishment with my son that didn’t put safety and education first. I see the hundreds of people each weekend, many of them first time shooters,
coming to Harnett County to shoot at Drake Landing where they have the chance to get a proper introduction to the sport under the watchful eyes of the instructors and safety officers
that patrol the courses. There are competing Sporting Clays establishments 20 minutes away in both Lee and Wake county, which we could get to just as easily, however we choose Drake
Landing. Dan’s place is a draw for locals like myself, but also many shooters from out of town, and even out of state.
I shoot at Drake Landing at least three weekends out of every month, and Dan has gone out of his way to accommodate me and my guests each time we visit. I’m a member of several gun collector
organizations, including the Parker Gun Collectors and A.H. Fox Gun Collectors, both of which have a strong contingent of members that travel for sporting clays events. With Dan’s help,
I’ve been able to organize several large shoots per year for friends and members of these organizations, bringing people from as far away as Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut,
Rhode Island, West Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina. These groups travel to Harnett County, stay in your hotels, eat at your local restaurants and spend their hard earned money
in Harnett County for one reason and one reason only….Drake Landing. This year during the Annual Spring Southern Side by Side Classic held at Deep River Sporting Clays in Sanford, I
witnessed a shift in loyalty from the shooting crowd that frequents this event. These folks not only chose lodging in Harnett County to be closer to Drake Landing, but extended their
stays in order to do additional shooting at Dan’s club beyond what was offered at the main event down in Sanford. The bottom line is that Harnett County tourism is benefitting thanks
to Dan Andrews. Please vote yes, and grant Drake Landing the conditional use permit they deserve, and let’s work to re-establish their zoning classification.
