JANUARY 2nd. 1956
The Board of Commissioners of Harnett County met in regular session on Monday,
January 2nd, 1956, at 9:00 A. M., with all members present. Also present were
the County Attorney, the Auditor nd the Clerk to Board.
The report of D. P. Ray, Tax Collector, was approved and ordered filed.
The report of Elizabeth F. Matthews, Clerk Superior Court, was approved and
ordered filed.
the report of Inez Harrington, negister of Deeds, was approved and ordered
filed.
The report of Grover Henderson, Coroner, was approved and filed.
The report of Hoy Godwin and B. H. Sellars, electrical Inspectors, were
approved and ordered filed.
The report of L. B. McLean, Veteran Service Officer, was approved and
ordered filed.
The report of Earl H. Wells, Dog Warden, was approved and filed.
Commissioner ?ate. moved, seconded by Commissioner J. E. Womble, that Glenn
Rooper be and ne is nereby named Asst. Solicitor of Superior Court at a salary
of $150.66 per month. Motion carried.
Commissioner B. P. Ingram moved, seconded by Commissioner Johnson, that the
operation of the Seminole Home for delinquent children continue its operation as
heretofore. Motion carried.
Commission J. E. Womble moved, seconded by Commission B. P. Ingram, that the
listing period for. property taxation in Harnett County be extended to February
15th. Motion carried.
The Board ordered that J. A. Weeks, age q4, Averasboro Township, be re-
leaved of Poll Tax for year 1955 on account of physical disability.
The Board also exempted J. A. Weeks for poll tax for year 1956.
Bond No. 973075 F & 5 P 0 with W. B. Castleberry, Constable, as Principal
in the amount of 41,000.00 was approved and filed with Clerk Superior Court

In consideration of the sum of Ten - Dollars this bond, subject to all
its covenants and conditions is hereby continued in force until on the 4th day
of December, 1956,

or continuation certificates attached thereto (including this one) are not cumula-
tive, and that the total liability of the Maryland Casualty Company under the
attached bond aid all such renewal or continuation certificates shall not exceed
the penalty named in the attached bond, to wit: 1,000.00

The report of Kyle Harrington, Clerk of Recorder's Court, was approved and
ordered filed.
Mr. Casey Fowler, President of the Lillington Chamber of Commerce, appeared
before the Board and advised_ the Board that the State Highway Commission is con-
sidering changing the humber of U. S. Highway 15 -A which passes through Harnett
County. After considerable discussion and expression by the members of- their
sentiment that changing the number of this highway would be detrimental to the wel-
fare of Harnett County and- particularly that area through which said Highway 15=1
passes, the following resolution was adopted by unanimous vote:
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Harnett County Board of Commissioner
that the State Highway Commission has, under consideration a proposal to change the
number of U. S . Highway 15 -A and said Commission will, as this bodyris_ advised,
hold a public hearing on such proposal in Raleigh, North Carolina, on January 26,
1956; and
WHEREAS said U. S. Highway 15 -A passes through very nearly the center of
Harnett County for a distance of approximately 22 miles with numerous business
houses located along the same; and
WHEREAS' it is the opinion of the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County
that there is no- reasonable basis for making achange in the number of said high-
way and the changing of such number would be detrimental to the welfare of Harnett
County and particularly the area and businesses now served by such highway:
NOW,. THEREFORE' be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners -of Harnett County
as follows;
1. That the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County is opposed to the pro-
posed change in the Number of said U. S. Highway 15 -A.
2. That the State Highway Commission be and it is - hereby, requested, to refain
.from changing the number of said highway.
3. That a copy, of this resolution be- furnished to the President of the Lining-
ton Chamber 'of Commerce for presentation to the State Highway Commission.
