The Board .of Commissioners of Harnett County met in regular session
Monday, May 2, 1938, with Chairman J.B.-Ennis' and Commissioners Geo.T.Noel,
A.A.Cameron, J.S.Barker and Lonnie R.Byrd present. Also County Attorney
H.C.Strickland.
It is ordered that J.S.McLearb and Geo.T.Noel be appointed as committee
to investigate the valuation of property of E.L.Parker in Averasboro and
Duke Townships. •
It is ordered that valuation of property listed to W.R.Strickland in
Averasboro Township be reduced in valuation as follows: Lot valuation of
$1050.00 be reduced to $600.00; house valuation of $875.00 be reduced to $700.
It is ordered that Charles Ross be paid $1,000.00 as an advance on fee
for services rendered in connection with refunding Township Road Bonds with
County bonds, same to be paid from Township' Road Bonds Fund.
It is ordered that valuation of the property of S.C.Page estate in
Averasboro Township be reduced from $4010.00 to x$'3500.00 on account of error
in listing cleared land.
It is ordered that J.S.McLean, lax Supervisor, be instructed to go in
person to the Union Store, East Erwin, N.C. and list the mercantile stock
in this store.
A committee composed of Messrs Chas.Ross and John 'lien McLeod of the
Harnett County Bar appeared before the Board and presented the following
resolution:
"Be it resolved by the Harnett County Bar that a committee of
the Bar be appointed to appear before the Board of County Commissioners
at their meeting the first Monday in May to request said Board to sponsor
a W.P.A. project to re -index the records in the office of the Clerk of
Superior Court and the Register of Deeds. ".
The Board ordered County Attorney H.C.Strickland to secure all the
information possible concerning this work under the WPA project and present
it to the Board at its next meeting.
Upon motion by Commissioner Noel, seconded by Commissioner J.S.Barker,
it was by ananimous vote of the Commissioners ordered that the period for
the listing of polls and property for taxation for the year 1938 be extended
in the County until May 25th. 1938.
It is ordered that the valuation of lot of Mrs.Mamie B.Hood on North
Wilson Avenue, Dunn, N.C. be reduced from 81750.00 to $875.00, the lot being
only 25 feet wide whereas it was assessed onba front foot basis of 50 ft. wide.
It is ordered that the valuation of the property listed as the A.C.MeNeill
estate in Upper Little River Township be reduced from $12,550.00 to $7,850.00,
on accounty of error in listing.
It is ordered that the committee of the County Home which is composed of
J.S.Barker and A.A.Cameron be authorized to purchase a piano for the County
Home.
It is ordered that the property listed to Mrs.W.R.Howard, a corner lot
on North Wilson Avenue in town of Dunn, be reduced in valuation from y$'1600. 00
to $900.00.
It is ordered that visitors be allowed to visit the prisoners at the
County Home only on the first Sunday in each month.
Acting on complaints lodged in ample time, the Board ordered the following
reductions:
(1) the building of Dunn Furniture Co., East Broad Street, Dunn, N.0
be reduced in tax valuation to $2625.00;
(2) The lot on North Orange Avenue; Dunn, N.C. listed to W.M.Brannan, be
reduced in tax valuation to $500.00
The following road petitions were presented at the Board meeting, approved
and ordered forwarded to State Highway and Public Works Commission:
(1) to improve and maintain that certain road in Grove Township, which
extnnds from a point on the Angier - Benson road just north of T.B.Young's
residence following Angier's rural mail route No. 2 southward to a point east
of where Barclaysville- Bethel road crosses Black River.
(2) In Stewart's Creek and Anderson Creek Townships for a 2.8 mile road
from Preston Norris' residence on Highway No. 210 to L.D.Brock estate.
It is ordered that J.A.Spivey be paid $15.00 for services of\ tax suits
summons while serving as Deputy Sheriff under former Sheriff Fowler, such
payment to be full settlement for said services.

Charles Lee Guy, Jr. of Dunn appeared before the Board in behalf of his
written application for appointment as Constable for Averasboro Township to fill
the unexpired term of Annie N.Hudson, who recently resigned. The Board
requested Mr. Guy to secure recommendation from Sheriff Salmon. The Sheriff
refused to make the recommendation and ?r.Guy withdrew his application.
Mrs.B.P.Gentry, Supt. of WPA sewing rooms in the County, appeared before
the Board and explained that the County will be required to pay 25% of the
cost of materials, amounting to approximately $400. or $500. per year. The
Board deferred action at present.
The report of Register of Deeds was accepted and filed.
The report of the Tax collector was accepted and filed.
