November 8th. 1934.
The Board of County Commissioners met in adjourned session with all members
present.
It is ordered that petition for road in Grove Township leading from a point
near J. Shell Stewart's residence to a point on the Prospect Church road be approved
and sent to the State Highway Commission for consideration.
It is ordered that report of L.M. Chaffin, C.S.C. be accepted and filed.
It is ordered that report of Dr. A.W• Peede, County Health Officer, be
accepted and filed.
It is ordered that a Committee composed of J.B. Ennis, E.L.Cooke and J.S.
McLean be appointed to investigate the valuation of theproperty of E.F. Young and
Mrs. Troy Monde.
It is ordered that Archie A. Turner be granted peddlers lioense without
charge on account of physical disability.
It is ordered that J.F. Bethune be relieved of the payment of poll tax for
the year 1934 on account of physical disability.
It is ordered that Wm. D. Page be granted peddler's license for the year
1934 -35, on account of physical disability.
It is ordered that Wm. D. Page be relieved of the payment of poll tax for
the year 1934.
It is ordered that the Chairman of the Board and the Clerk to the Board be
empowered to execute a deed to Mrs. A.D• Ooeta (Bettie P.) for her property which
was foreclosed for taxes.
It is ordered that Mies Nannie Matthews be granted peddler's license for the
year 1934 -35.
It is ordered that report of Geo. L. Cannaday, Tax Collector, be accepted and
filed.
It is ordered that petition for road in Buckhorn Township known as the "Mill
Road" be approved and forwarded to the S.H. and P.W Commission for consideration.
RESOLUTION:
WHEREAS, the houses and lot on North Wilson Awenue in the Town of Dunn listed
and owned by Mrs. Mary A. Stephens are in a run down condition and in need of repair
and not fit for occupancy and have been vacant and unoccupied, one for about past
five years and one for about past three years, and whereas tax valuation on said
property is out of line with valuation of adjoining property; and whereas, there
appears error in the valuation and listing of said property in that the unimproved
and damaged condition were not considered in valuation of said property for taxation
NOW, therefore, Be it resolved that the County tax valuation of said property
of Mrs. Mary A. Stephens Estate on North Wilson Avenue, Dunn, N.C. be reduced in
valuation 2b$ for years, 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934, and taxes be calculated on said
reduced valuation.
RESOLUTION:
It is hereby ordered by the Board of Bounty Commissioners of Harnett County
that the County of Harnett by eta proper officers sell and convey to C.H. Dula and
wife, Beulah Dula the lands in Barbecue Township, Harnett County, containing 80
acres, formerly owned by J.C. Mellett as described in deed by I.R. Williams, Com-
missioner to Harnett County recorded in nook 244, page 320, for the sum of $218.28
same being the full amount of all taxes and cost and interest due County and unpaid
against said lands for year 1924 and prior years, the purchase price to be paid
$80.50 cash at time of delivery of deed and balance secured by note end deed of
trust to I.R.Williams, Trustee for Harnett County, said note due and payable May
1, 1935. And further that upon the execution and delivery of said note and deed
of trust to J.S. McLean, Auditor and payment of said $80.00 cash, that a deed by
County of Harnett be executed and delivered to said C.H. Dula and wife by the proper
County Officials, and Auditor is instructed and authorized to deliver all tax
receipts and tax sale certificates to said C.H. Dula and wife and dismiss at cost
of County all actions es to said 80 acres of land and particularly No. 1 -384,
Harnett County vs J.C.Mellett.

It is ordered that John C. Muse be employed to audit the account of J.O. West.
The question of the election of a Tax Oolleotor for the collection of the 1934
taxes was presented to the Board with the following applicants for that position:'
Geo. L. Cannaday, H.M. O'Quinn and W.D. Harrington.
Upon motion by Mr. Byrd and seconded by Mr. Barker Mr. Cannaday was nominated
and by a vote of the Board elected Tax Collector.
It is ordered that J.P. Davis of duke Township be relieved of the payment of
poll tax for the years 1933 and 1934.`
It is now ordered that the Board adjourn subject to the call of the Chairman.

The Board of County Commissioners met in call session with the following
members present: J.B. Ennis, Chairman,H.M. O'Quinn, 3. Daniel Byrd and J.S. Barker
I.R. Williams, County Attorney present.
Grand Jury Report
NORTH CAROLINA: SUPERIOR COURT.
HARNETT COUNTY; NOVEMBER TERM, 1934.
TO HIS HONOR, Judge M.V. Barnhill, Judge Presiding.
We, the Grant Jury for the November Term 1934 of Harnett Superior Court
do respectfully make the following as our Report and Recommendations.
We have considered all bills sent us by the Solicitor and disposed of
them.
We inspected the Courthouse and found all the offices in fair condition
but needing paint.
We inspected the jail and found it in good sanitary condition, except
kitchen, dining room and front porch.
We found the convict camp in excellent condition and the prisoners being
well fed and eared for.
We inspected the County Home and found every thing in good condition
except a few repairs on door steps. The inmates seemed satisfied and well cared
for.
We inspected the County Garage and found every thing satisfactory.
We desire to make the following recommendations:
We recommend that the floor in dining room and front porch of the jail
be repaired. And a rag be placed on the kitchen floor of jail and also paint jail.
We recommend that the night watchman at the Convict camp be given a new
set of door steps to his quarters.
The recommendation of last Grand Jury asking that two children of John
Russell be removed from the County Home has not been done. We further recommend
that they be removed as soon as possible.
We recommend that the County Home Cemetery be cleaned up, fenced in and
beautified, as recomiended by the last Grand Jury.
We recommend that a daily record of all expenses of the County Home be
We recommend that all slot machines used illegally be removed.
We recommend that the six months term for Grand Jurors be adopted.
The Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners came before the Grand
Jury and statedthat on account of lack of funds the former recommendations by
Grand Jury had not been complied with.
We desire to thank His Honor, Judge M.V' Barnhill, the Solicitor and the
County officials for the assistance and courtesies aka rendered as during this
term.

The report of the Grand Jury for November Term 1934 was read and con-
sidered item by item and the following action was taken;
It is ordered that as soon as sufficient taxes justly belonging to the
General County Fund have been collected that the purchasing agent of the County
of Harnett purchase the following materials: sufficient paint to paint properly
kitchen of jail, dining room of jail and front porch.of jail and all offices in
the Court house, including the Court room: sufficent lumber to carry out the
recommendations of the Grand Jury as to repairs at Courthouse, jail and County Home.
