HomeMy WebLinkAbout02051940146 February 5, 1940 The Board of County Commissioners of Harnett County met in regular session Monday, February 5, 1940, at 10:00 O'clock A.M. Present were Chairman J.B.s,nnis, and Commissioners L.R.Byrd, R.L.Pate, Ferd D.Jackson, and A.A.Cameron. County Attorney H.C.Strickland, was also present. The monthly report of Inez Harrington, Register of Deeds, was presented to the Board, which was approved and ordered filed. The monthly report of Howard Godwin, Clerk of the Superior Court, was presented to the Board, which was approved and ordered filed. The monthly report of W.D.Harrington, Tax Collector, was presented to the Board, which was approved and ordered filed. The report of the Grand Jury for the January Term 1940 Superior Court, was read and ordered filed. It is ordered that beer license be granted to B.T.Stewart, Coats, N.C., to sell beer in the town of Coats, subject to the approval of the Town Board of Coats, N.C. It is ordered that beer license be granted to Turner Glenn Marshburn, Lillington, N.C., to sell beer at the Triangle Service Station, 1 mile North of Lillington, N.C. BE IT RESOLVED that the time within which to complete the listing of taxes in the several townships of the County, be and the same is hereby extended to February 20, 1940. It is ordered that J.A.Hockaday, Angier, N.C., be and he is hereby appointed as Special List Taker to take the tax list of merchantable stocks in the County, subject to the approval of the Tax Supervisor. It is ordered that the lot of land listed as 14 acres (Lot No. 5 in the Division of W.I.Stewart lands), in Grove Township, be listed as 8.2 acres, the true acreage, and taxes adjusted accordingly; and that the tract of lard listed as 40j acres in Grove Township, be listed as 30.25 acres, the true acreage; and taxes adjusted accordingly. The two parcels of land being listed by Sanford Stewart. BE IT RESOLVED that the tract of land formerly listed to John M.McNeill in Johnsonville Township, Harnett County, N.C., and once belonging to the estate of George McNeill, containing 50 acres, more or less, and adjoining the Marks and Guthrie lands, upon which Johnnie McNeill resides, and which is involved in foreclosure Judgment No. A -1313, office of the Clerk of Superior Court of Harnett County, be conveyed to N.M.Johnson present owner of said land, upon payment to the County of Harnett of $212.55; and upon receipt of said sum by the County of Harnett, the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners is hereby authorized and directed to execute in the name of said County and on its behalf, deed to said property, and the Clerk to the Board will attest the same in proper form. It is ordered that the lot 75 x 140 feet on King Street in the town of Dunn, N.C., listed to Mrs. Annie S.Parker, be reduced in tax valuation from $525.00 to $475.00, for the year 1939. BE IT RESOLVED that 89 acres of land, formerly listed to W.J.Porter, in Upper Little River Township, aril acquired by the County of Harnett at tax foreclosure sale, under Judgment No. 2071 -A -1083, be sold to - -- Irving A.Porter - -- for the total sum of $460.00, on the following terms: $25.00 Feb. 10, 1940; $25.00 March 1, 1940; $140.00 November 15, 1940; $135.00 Nov. 15, 1941; $135.00 November 15, 1942. The Chairman of the Board is hereby authorized to execute deed to Irving A.Porter and the Clerk will attest the same. BE IT RESOLVED that the property formerly listed to Mrs. J.E.Godwin, in Averasboro Township, and acquired by the County of Harnett and the Town of Durn at tax foreclosure sale under Judgment No. 1850 -A -888 be sold to W.L.Shugart - -- -Dunn, N.C., for the sum of $500.00, on the following terms and conditions: $170.00 cash with this offer; and the remaining balance of $330.00 to be divided into 24 equal monthly payments of $13.75 each, due and payable at the office of the collector on on the first day of each month until principal and interest is fully paid. Being a lot at the intersection of East Divine Street and South Elm Avenue, located on the East side of South Elm Street, with a frontage of 75 feet on said Street and extending back with East Divine Street 140 feet to the alley, being a lot 75 x 140 feet; and the Chairman of the Board and the Town of Dunn will deliver to W.L.Shugart a deed to the property. 147 BE IT RESOLVED that the 17 acres of land., formerly owned by R.T.Rambeaut, in Black River 'Township, and acquired by the County of Harnett under tax foreclosure judgment No. SD 2299 -A -1292, be leased to - -- "d.R.Broadwell, Jr. on the following terms: 475.00 be paid to the County as rent on the above tract of land for the term of one year ending December 31, 1940. BE IT RESOLVED that the 7.2 acres of land, formerly owned and listed for taxation by Alice Smith Estate, adjoining the lands of John k.hodges and R.B.Smith, in Stewart's Creek Township, and acquired by the County in re: 3D 2160 -A -810, be rented to Arthur Smith (colored) for the sum of $25.00 to be paid as rent to the County on the above tract of land for a term of one year ending December 4, 1940. It is ordered that a practical nurse be secured for the County Home for an indefinite period, at not more than $50.00 per month, subject to the approval of Miss Lillie Davis and Superintendent E.C.Byrd. The Board of Commissioners appointed Commissioners Ferd.'D.Jackson and A.A.Cameron to investigate the tax valuation of the lands of John Aaron Senter in Anderson Creek Township. It is ordered that two rolling chairs be purchased for use at the County Home, and the Purchasing Agent is hereby authorized to purchase same. It is ordered that William Suggs, of Duke Township, be relieved of poll tax permanently, on account of permanent disability. It appearing that L.M.Chaffin, Commissioner, appointed to sell the lands of J.A.Honeycutt and wife in Upper Little River Township, to create assets for use of the County, has been unable to sell sane, and that J.E.Davis has deposited 452.50 with the Commissioner; IP IS PHiiR FORE ordered that the sum of 352.50 be refunded by the Commissioner L.M.Chaffin to J.E.Davis, and that J.E.Davis, Guardian, rent out the land for the year 1940 for the amount of 350.00 standing rent, payable October 1, 1940. It is ordered that the County Attorney purchase, on behalf of the County, a North Carolina Flag and a United States Flag, with proper standards, for use at the bench in the courtroom, in the courthouse. It is ordered that J.M.Judd, of Varina, N.C., be relieved of $390.00 valuation on 278 acres of land, listed to him in Buckhorn Township, for the years 1939 and 1940, on account of the timber having been cut off the land. The Board appointed Commissioners Ferd D.Jackson and R.L.Pate as a Committee to investigate the tax valuation on property of D.H.Senter in Hector's Creek Township. The Board recessed to reconvene Monday, February 12, 1940. Chairman Clerk.
