HomeMy WebLinkAbout02011949468 February 1, 1949 Harnett County Board of Commissioners met in special session on Tuesday February 1, 1949 with Chairman L A Tart, Commissioners J A Senter, Carson Gregory, C G Fields and W A Johnson, County Attorney presents Commissioners Paul Tysinger was absent. This special meeting was called by the Chairman for the purpose of considering certain action necessitated by the untimely and regretable death of Mr W D Harrington, Harnett County Tax Collector. - Mrs Sloan was called before the Board for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not she could accept appointment on this temporary basis, and she expressed her will- ingness to do so and to cooperate with the Board fully in this matter. However, she requested that she be relieved of the responsibility of making the daily deposits. The Board acceded to this Request and upon motion of Commissioner Senter, seconded by Commissioner Fields and unanimously passed, H D Carson Jr., County Auditor was ordered to make all deposits for Tax Collector Office. Upon motion of Commissioner Senter, seconded by Commissioner Fields, the board ordered, was by unanimous vote that the office of the Tax Collector be closed from Tues day morning until Thursday morning, out of respect to Mr Harrington, and that the penalty for late payment of taxes be deferred until Monday Morning February 7th, 1949, in order that the closing of said office would not deprive any taxpayer of the opport- unity to make payment of taxes before the penalty became effective. Commissioner Fields moved that all County Offices be closed: on Wednesday-Feb. 2n d, 1949, from 10: AM until 2:00 P M out of respect to Mr Harrington and in order that County employees might attend his funeral. This motion was duly seconded by Commissioner Gregory and unanimously passed. Upon motion of Commissioner Fields seconded by Commissioner Gregory the Board ordered by unanimousl: vote that the records of the Tax Collectors office be audited before the vacancy in said office be permanently filled and Mr Harringtonts permanent successor took over. February 7, 1949 The Board of Coininissioners of Harnett County met in regular session on Monday February 7, 1949 with all members present, also present were County Attorney, the Audi- tor, and Clerk to Board. The Board ordered that Harvey Deal, Angier be adnitted to County Home for Treat- ment. It is ordered that Gilbert Womack, Lillington # 3 be released of Poll Tax for years 1948, - 1949 on account of Physical Disability. The Board ordered that W A Johnson, County Attorney, write for necessary infor- mation concerning Health Dept. duties. The report of Howard Godwin, C.S.C., was approved and ordered filed. The report of Inez Harrington, RegisteroofoDeeds was approved and ordered filed. The report of Tax Collector, was approved and ordered filed. The report of L B McLean, Veterans Service Officer was approved and ordered filed. The Bo a' d accepted the recommendations ofthe Executive Committee in the apoint- ment of a Coroner for Harnett County, and appointed Grover Henderson, Dunn, N.C., as Coroner to serve the unexpired term of C B Allred, who resigned. Commissioner Fields moved, seconded by Commissioner Carson Gregory that the sal- ary and transportation of the Tax Collector be set at $4500. per year and that all fees heretofore paid to the Tax Collector cot into the County fund. Commissioner J A Senter moved, seconded,by Commissioner Paul Tysinger that the appointment of a Tax Collector be deferred to a later date. The Board ordered that a twenty per cent tax reduction be made on all motor vehicles listed for tax valuation from the January, February° and March addition of the red book. The Board ordered that all hospital cases be referred to John Aaron Senter and that no further blanket orders for medicines be given without the approval of John Aaron Senter and that no single food orders to exceed $5.00 and not more than three orders pDr family per month be dssued. The Welfare department to be notified of this order. The. Board ordered that a food order for Twenty Five Dollars per be- :issued to Mr and Mrs W T Ferguson, Broadway # 1, in Upper Little River Township, Miss -Wilke Williams was authorized to cothtact Mr and Pdrs Ferguson in regards to them making a deed for their farm Co theCounty of Harnett and entering the County Home for further care.
