The Board of Commissioners of Harnett County met in a reaular session Monday,
June 7th, 1948 at 10 :00 A M with all members present also present was H
Strickland, County Atty., Herbert Carson,Jr., Auditor and Inez Harrington Clerk
to Board.
Be it resolved that property acquired by Harnett County atta tax foreclosure sale
under Judg. #A 879 be sold to Neil S. Green, Erwin,N.C. Box 123 for the cash sum of
$100.00. The Chairman of the Board is hereby authorized to execute deed to Neil S.
Green and the Clerk to Board will attest same.
Be it resolved that the property acquired by Harnett County at a tax foreclosure
sale which is located on west Johnson Street and North King Street be sold to J B
(Doc) Tart upon payment of $330.00 The chairman of the Board is hereby authorized
to execute deed to J B Tart and Clerk to Board will attest same.
The report of W D Harrington, Tax Collector was approved and ordered filed.
The report of Howard Godwin, C S C., was approved and ordered filed.
The report of Inez Harrington, Register of Deeds, was approved and ordered
filed.
The report of L B McLean, County Service Officer, was approved and ordered filed.
It is ordered that Frank McNeill Broadway #1, N.C. be released of poll tax for
yrs 1938 1939 1940 on account of being in Military Service at that time.
It is ordered that Lawrence Maynor, Lillington,N.C. be allowed $15.00 per month
on account of physical disability.
It is ordered that the Board allow $24.00 per month for Board and care of Nathan
Yeargan at the Alexander School, Union Mi11s,N.C.
An ordinance on'rrivilege taxation in Harnett County was signed and filed with
the Clerk to the Board.
The following road petitions were approved and ordered forwarded to State Highway
& Public Works ommission:
(1) to improve, repair and render serviceable that portion of the State maintained
road and highway in Harnett County extending from Mamers,N.C. to J W Knight Store
on the Johnsonville Road. This is a much traveled pention of said system and has been
badly neglected in recent years, as a result of which it is in very bad condition
and almost impassable.
(2) take over and maintain that certain road in Lillington Township-beginning
at a point on,Highway #15 at stock yard -12 miles from Lillington and runs west to
Fort Bragg Highway 'a distance of 1.3 miles and - passing the homes of Thadious Smith,
Casper Tart Farms Walter Bailey and others.
(3) take over and maintain that certain road known as the old Cameron road:
Beginning at a point at the Overhead Bridge at Spout Springs on Fort Bragg Sanford
Highway and runs East to a Place called the big oak on the Overhills road a distance
of approximately, 4* miles.
It having been made to appear to the satisfaction of the Members of the Board
of Commissioners of the County of Harnett, State of North Carolina, that there is
such an accumulation of criminal actions in the Harnett County Superior Court as to
require the holding of a special term for its dispatch:
Be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Harnett that His
Excellency, R Gregg Cherry, Governor of the State of North Carolina, be and he
is hereby requested to issue an m der to the Judge of the Fourth Judicial District
of North Carolina, or to any other Judge of the Superior Court, requiring him to
hold a Special Term of Superior Court fat the County of Harnett for the trial of
criminal cases, to begin aril be held on Monday, June 28, 1948, and to continue for
such time as may be necessary to dispose of the cases on the Criminal Docket of said
Court, whether for one week or longer; and that for the purposes indicated no Grand
Jury will be necessary.

The Board accepted the resignation of R A Coller, Constable of Lillington Township
to become effective this date.
The Board appointed Flectcher Bethune Constable to fill out unexpired term of R A
Collier.
The Board ordered that 170 acres Johnsonville known as W T Marshburn land be sold
to John Monroe, Olivia for sum of $300. cash and Chairman of Board execute Deed and
Clerk to Board will attest same.
It is ordered that Herbert D Carson Jr be and he is hereby designated to accept
on the behalf of Harnett the prepayment of such taxes of the 1948 levy of County
taxes from taxpayers who may desire to pre -pay such taxes his official bond to
cover his added duties as such collector of pre -paid taxes.
The Board ordered that the County offices be closed for -the holiday July 3rd.
The Board appointed W D Harrington, Tax Collector and Oollector of revenue for the
County of Harnett for the fiscal year beginning July 1 1948 and ending June 30, 1949.
C R Ammons was appointed County Farm Agent for a term of 1 yr.
TD O'Quinn was appointed assistant Farm Agent for a term of 1 yr.
Lorainve Vail was appointed Home Demonstration Agent for a term of 1 yr The
Home Demonstration Agent Assistant was le &t vacant at this time.
L K Boston was appointed Negro Farm Agent for a term of 1 yr.
Ida Hinnant was appointed Negro Home Demonstration Agent for a term of 1 yr.
Supt. Reid Ross appeared before the Board of Commissioners and presented the
tentative School Budget for the year 1948 -1949.
