The Board of Commissioners of Harnett County met in a regular session on Monday
lay 5, 1947 at 10:00 A M with all members present. Also H C Strickland, County Atty.
and Inez Harrington, Clerk to the Board.
The Board ordered that land advertised for sale by the County be postponed until
a survey can be made and corners established at which time sale will be advertised
again and land sold to highest bidder.
The Board ordered that Hiram Stewart of Grove Township be released of penalty
in amount of $10.29 for failure to list on account of physical disability, during
listing time for year 1946.
All items to be purchased for Harnett County will be submitted to R L Bate,
Purchasing Agent or to H D Carson Jr Count-; Auditor. No one is to buy any merchandise
locally or elsewhere.
The monthly report of Inez Harrington, Register of Deeds was approved and ordered
filed.
The report of Howard Godwin. C S C was approved and ordered filed.
The report of W D Barrington, Tax Collector wad approved and ordered filed.
The report of L B McLean Veteran Service Officer was approved and ordered filed.
It Is ordered by the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County that the County
Attorney institute proper legal action to evict Bennie Matthews from the County
building residence located on the Courthouse premises.
It is ordered that upon payment by Gus David Mc1°eil.l of the sum of 4138.19 to the
County of Harnett the interest of the County of riarnett be conveyed to him in and to
about 25 acres of land in Stewart's Creek Township, Harnett County N C described in
Judgment # A -991, formerly listed to Gus T McNeill; and the Chairman is authorized
to ex;cute deed to Purchaser, and the Clerk will attest the same, on behalf of the
County.
The following read petitions were approved and ordered forwarded to the State
Highway and Public Workd Commission.
(1) That public road leading eastwardly from the Lee County line to Swann's Station
by way of the homes of Mrs B H Wilson, Mrs Bruce Noell, Worth McFarland and Ellis
Norden, to a point near the home of Mrs John Harrtngt-n, a distance of approximately
four miles, be prepared for and treated with all weather surface material.
(2) Beginning at a point about one and one half miles north west from Macedonia
Baptist Church in Buckhorn Township, and following the line of a present old read
in about a northwestly direction to the old W H Hovvy Homeplace where reside one
Edgar Holt, to theChatham County line for a distance of about one and one -half miles.

Hon W C Harris, Judge holding the court of the 4th Judicial District appeared
before the Board and explained the necessity of providing suitable and ample facilities
fpr the accommodation of men and women jurors of the white and negro races, and advised
as to the necessity of making a jury list containing names of negro and white men
and women, The Board welcomed the suggestions made. -
The County Attorney was instructed -to contact Mr -A Y Hairr, Contractor, and have,
him estimate:and advise as to the necessary renovations and additons to the Courthouse
to provide suitable booms for deliberations, rest and facilities for both white men
and women jurors, and better toilet facilities for the public and county courthouse
employees.
Beer license were granted to Clayton Stewart, Coats #l, at Clayton's Pool Hall.
Wine and beer license were granted to Robert Taylor, Coats #l, at the Hill Top
Service Station.
Beer License were granted to George H Earnshaw Jr at Georges Station, Erwin N C.
Beer License were granted to James M.Byrd, Erwin N C #1 at Byrd's Service Station.
Been License were granted to Mrs J M Bryant, Linden #1 at Bryant's Service Station.
Beer and wine license were granted to Roy Adams, Angier N C #2 at Hill Top
Service Station.

It is ordered that the Veteran's Service Officer, in lieu of present compensation
be--paid 8250.00 monthly beginning as of May 1, 1947, the same to be in full compensa-
tion for services and including $75.00 monthly travel allowance.
The meeting recessed to reconvene at call of Chairman.
The Board of Commissioners of Harnett County met in regular session on Monday, June
2 1947 with A ACameron, Chairman, R L Pate, Ferd D 'Jackson and L R Byrd present,
Absent was L A Tart. Also present was the County Attorney, the Auditor and the
Clerk to the Board.
The resignation of AL Johnson, Constable of Grove Township was accepted and
W J Saul was appointed as Constable in Prove 'Township to fill out the unexpired
term of A L Johnson.
The Board granted free Peddler's license to Jack M Rowles to Peddle ice Cream
etc He being a disabled World War Veteran.

The following road petitions were approved and ordered forwarded to State
Highway & Public Worka Commission.
1. To open up and build and construct a road beginning at a point at or near
the residence of -ayton Butts, on the road leading from Angier to Buies Creek,
and running • thence Easterly and across the lands of Lyton Butts, B C Hockaday
J E Butts, W H Reardon and T H Gardner and others to a point near Jasper Dupree's
residence and into the road leading to Oak Grove Church the same being approximately
a distance of one mile.
2. To improve that certain road reaching from #210 highway at Neills Creek
Church to H C Rogers Station on #421 a total of 4,4 miles.
Resolved by --oard of Commissioners of "arnett County that the appointment of
J R Young, as made by the Board of Commissioners of the -own of Dunn on June 2
to the office of the Judge of Recorders Court of Dunn be and the same is hereby
approved for the unexpired term for which Duncan C Wilson was elected in the General
Election in November 1944.
The Board of Education with Reid Ross Superintendent of the County Schools
appeared before the Hoard of Commissioners and presented the tentative Budget for
1947 -48.
Upon recommendation of the 4xecutive Committee of the Harnett County Library
Board, J F Davis of Lillinaton was appointed Treasurer to serve - without compensation
his bend in the amount of Five Thousand Dollars, will he furnished.
The small butldi_bg back of the Courthouse will be used by the Harnett County
Library Board, for the purpose of carrying on the work. The Library Board agrees
to make necessary repairs onthe building with the understanding there will be not
rent for six months. After the expiration of Six months the Library Board agrees
to pay Twenty Five Dollars a month, for the use of the building. This rental agreement
may be terminated by either the Harnett County Board of Commissioners of the Harnett
County Library Board upon giving six months notice.
