The Board of County Commissioners of Harnett County met in regular session on
Monday June 3, 1946 with all members present also present were County Attorney, H.C.
Strickland, and Clerk to the Board, Inez Harrington. This being the Regular meeting
of the Board of Commissi n ers of Harnett County on the 1st Monday in June 1946, and
held at the Courthouse in Lillington, N. C., the regular place of meeting.
The report of Howard Godwin, C 3 C was presented, approved and ordered filed.
The report of W L Harrington, Tax Collector, was presented, approved and ordered
filed.
The report of Inez Harrinton, Register of lieeds, was presented, approved and
ordered filed.
The Board appointed J D Conder as wiring inspector for Central Electtic Member-
ship Corporation in Harnett Ccunty.
The Board appointed Ferd D Jackson and Lonnie R Byrd as committee to purchase
a stoker for the County Home.
It is ordered that Bond issue election be called cn July 13th.
The following road petitions were approved and ordered forwarded to State Highway
& Public Works Commission:
(1) Reaching from Johnsonville road North ninetenths mile to v. B. Holder.
(2) Reaching from a point on the fair ground road at Willie McLeod et al
Property to W M Tart's home a distance of approximately 250 or 300 yards.
(3) From Highway 301 at Mary Stewart School leading N for a distance
of 3 miles to the intersection of Temporary Highway 40. Also to two churches
and two cemeteries and Mail routes and school bus routes.
Herbert D. Carson,Jr., the Harnett County Accountant, is hereby designated
and appointed as collector of taxes which may be prepaid of the 1946 -47 Harnett
County tax levy, and he is directed to cause to be daily reposited in the First
Citizens Bank & Trust Company, of Dunn, any and all sums which he may collect and
receive by virtue of this authority.
It is ordered that N. M. Johnson be released in tax valuation for year 1940
45 on lots 55 56 in amount of $1800.00 Canary Street and Layton Ave. on account
of error listing and returned check in amount of $28.08.
It is ordered that A. Preston McKay, Col Irwin be relieved of Poll tax for
years 1946 and permanently on account of physical disability.
It is ordered thad D. P. Ulifford, Dunn,N.C. be relieved of Poll tax on
account Physical disability.
Board order -ad that Tax valuation of the house and lot of W. H. Lee, Lillington,
be placed on Tax book as Tax valuation $3500.;0 and tax valuation of house and lot of
J. "ay Johnson be placed en tax at &3500.00.
The Board considered several applications made by persons for appointment
of Harnett County Tax Collector. After discussion, the members of the Board
agreed unanimously that Mr. W. D. Harrington, present collector be appointed as
Harnett County Tax Collector for the fiscal year July 1, 1946 June 30, 1947 and that
the appointee be so notified and requested to present proper bond on or before June
30, 1946 on or before which date formal resolution and necessary clerance papers will
be adopted.
The reindexing of records in the Office of the Register of Deeds having
progressed sufficiently to enable the clerical workers to transfer from the cards
the names of grantors and grantees to the Index record sheets and it appearing that
those doing the work are not now in need of supervision on which in the past Mr.
L. M. Chaffin was employed to do, it is ordered that the service of L. M. Chaffin
be henceforth dispensed with.
RESOLUTION
The Board of Commissioners having learned with regret of the untimely death of
Coroner J. Melvin McLean, and each individual member of the Board feeling the deep
personal loss of a sincere friend and devoted public servant, for themselves and the
people of Harnett County.
DO HEREBY RESOLVE, (1) That in the death of Mr. McLeab the County of Harnett has
lost a capable and respected public servant who by his efficient and courteous con-
duct endeared himself to all people with whom he came in contact.

BE IT RESOLVED, (2) That the members of the Board of County Commissioners of
Harnett County on the part of themselves personally and in their offlial capacity do
express their sincere sympathy to the widow and children of our late coroner, who
served this County so ably for more than thirteen years.
Let a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the board, a copy
be transmitted to Mrs. J. Melvin McLean and copy be furnished the Press.

The members of the Harnett County Board of Commissioners met in tte it room at
the courthouse in Lillington, N 0 l°iednesday , June 6, 1946 at 10 :00 o'cloek A M
upon the expiration of the recess taken Monday, June 3rd, All members of the Board
were present.
Upon recommendation of hon I R t'lillians, Chairman of the Harnett County Demo-
cratic Executive Cornr.ittee, Mr. C B Allred of Lillin ;tcn, N C was appointed as
Harnett County Coroner to fill the unexpired teri of the late J, Melvin McLean
with bond fixed at 52,000.00 to be approved by the Board. The motion for the
appointment was made by commissi ner Ferd Jackson and seconded by Commissioner L R
Byrd, and unanimously carried, all members being present and voting for the appointee.
By unanimous vote cf the County Commissioners, the following named persons
were appointed to the respective positions set opposite their names for the one
year ten beginning July 1, 1946:

At 5:00 o'clock P M Wednesday June 5, 1946 it was determined by the Board of
Commissioner of Harnett Ccunty, Plorth Carolina that they could not finish the business
of Mcnday June,2, 1946 to which said later date recess had been taken of it's regular
meetingwhich convened the 1st Monday in June, namely June 3, 1946 and upon motion
duly made and seconded the members of said Board voted unanimously to recess it's
meeting further, and to reconvene on Monday June 17, 1946 at 10:00 o�cloek A M for
the further transaction pf business.
