The written proposition of Wilbert Truelove to purchase from tb.e county. its -
interest in a certain tract of land formerly owned by Mr. Truelove and acquired
by the county under tax foreclosure judgment # A -1722 was presented to the Board -.
The proposition of Mr. Truelove, made on hie behalf by Mrs. Lax McLeod, attorney, -
was in the amuunt of $402.14 and the Board was advised by the tax collector that -
this represented all taxes, costs and penalties involved in said suit and the
1957 taxes on said lands.
Upon motion of Commissioner Womble seconded by Commissioner Pleasant, the
Board voted unanimously to convey its interest in said land to said Wilbert -
Truelove upon payment of said sum of $402.14 and authorized the Chairman to
execute deed, attested by the Clerk, covering the county's interest in said
land upon receipt of said sum. -
A delegation of approximately ten citizens from Erwin appeared before the
Board and requested that the Board cause one d- the Rural Policemen of- Harnett
County to take up residence in the town -of Erwin. .Various members of the delega --
tion addressed the Board on this question, pointing out -that much lawlessness now
exists in Erwin and that in the opinion of the members of the delegation this con-
dition could be grearly improved if a full time law enforcement officer resided in
the town. The Board discussed said matter with the members of the delegation at
length and within its own membership after the delegation left the meeting
After fully considering all aspects of the matter, the Board adopted, by
unanimous vote, the following resolution: -
Whereas, a delegation-of outstanding public spirited citizens of Erwin has
appeared before the Board, advised theBoard that there is a great amount of
law breaking im the town of Erwin, and requested that one of the County's Rural
Policemen be placed in Erwin, and
Whereas, the Board appreciates the interest of these citizens and recognizes
the need for additional law enforcement in said town,-but, -at the same time, does" -
not feel-that the Board can employ an additional Rural Policeman at the present
time and, likewise, does.not feel:that it should require one of the presently -
employed Rural Policemen to move to Erwin. -
Now, therefore, be it resolved -by theBBoard of Commissioners that the Sheriff
and the Harnett County Rural - Policemen be and they are hereby requested, and said
Rural Policemen are directed, to spend as much time as possible th the town of
Erwin axid to cooperate fully with the citizens of said town, to take all possible
action to control said lawlessness and maintain law and order on the highestpossi-
ble level. -
The Meeting Adjourned.
