REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 2, 1971 The regular meeting of the County Commissioners convened on Monday, August 2, 1971 in the Commissioners Room, Courthouse, Lillington, N. C., with the following present: Chairman M. H. Brock, V- Chairman D. P. Ray, members C. E. McLamb, W. J. Cotton, Jr. and Gilbert Brown. Also present H. D. Carson, Jr., Clerk to the Board and Edward McCormick, County Attorn CALL TO ORDER Chairman Brock called the meeting to order at 9:15 a. m. and offered the morning prayer. READING AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the July 1971 meeting were read and approved. Tax Collector TAX BALANCES ORDER OF BUSINESS Mr. W. Earl Jones, Tax Collector presented the report of his department. He then informed the Board of the necessity of some degree of ease in the resolution as recorded in Minute Book # 12, page 43. " ACTION: Commissioner Cotton made a motion that Mr. Jones be given the authority to make certain and necessary decisions on partial payment of taxes on tax suits until the end of this calendar year, December 31, 19711. Commissioner Ray seconded the motion and it carried. The Board requested Mr. Jones to appear before the Board at the January 1972 meeting to inform the Board of his evaluation of the efforts. A motion was made by Commissioner Cotton seconded by Commissioner McLamb that the tax balance for the year of 1960 be charged off in accordance wi the resolution of July 1, 1970, as recorded in Minute Book 12, page 402, reference to Tax Balances. The motion carried unanimously. TAX SUPERVISOR Mr. Thomas Allen, Tax Supervisor, appeared before the Board and gave a report of his departments' progress on tax receipts and revaluation. r., y. OF ELECTIONS Permission was given to the Chairman to hire a person to fill the position as secretary for the Soil Conservation Department and the Board of Electibbns. POSITION IN EXT. DEPT. Mr. James Goff, Chairman of the Extension Department, presented facts re- garding Sutton Austin as a candidate to fill the position in his depart- ment made vacant by the resignation of James P. West. The Board agreed that Mr. Goff and the Chairman make proper arrangements for this man to appear before the Board. ABOR DAY HOLIDAY As the first Monday in September falls on a holiday, the Board agreed to hold their regular September meeting on September 7, 1971, Tuesday. Pro per notice will be made available to the public. WADE LUCAS kDJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 11:30 a. m., after which a brief Executive Sessi was held. Mr. Wade Lucas, Dunn, spoke to the Board regarding his recent visit to the Tuscarora Indian Tribe in Niagara Falls, New York. He had visited them as an Ambassador Goodwill, this honor bestowed upon him by the Hon- orable Robert W. Scott, and as a Special Emissary. He told the Board of the life and ambitions of this tribe, the methods they employ in dealing with law and order, the education of the people and their way of life in general. The Chairman of the Chiefs Council expressed a desire to send something back to North Carolina as a goodwill gesture. Mr. Lucas allow- ed the Board to view the following message as it appeared written on white doeskin: * * * * * * * * ** "TO GOVERNOR ROBERT W. SCOTT: We, the people of the Tuscorora Indian Nation send our greetings and expression of good will and friendship to you and the people of North Carolina through your ambassador of Good will and Emissary,/dV.
