HomeMy WebLinkAbout10171969342 SPECIAL MEETING October 17, 1969 The Harnett County Board of Commissioners convened in special session Friday, October 17, 1969 in the Commissioners' Room, Courthouse, Lillington, North Carolina. Those present were: Chairman M. H. Brocl , Vice - Chairman D. P. Ray, Jr.; W. J. Cotton, Jr., Member and Gilbert Brown, Member. Also present, Herbert D. Carson, Jr. Clerk to the Board. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Brock called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. ORDER OF BUSINESS RESOLUTION OPTIONAL ONE -CENT SALES TAX ADJOURNMENT The special meeting was held for the purpose of discussing the one -cent optional sales tax. After discussion, the following resolution was adopted. NORTH CAROLINA HARNETT COUNTY R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS the Harnett County Commissioners feel that a broadening of the local tax base is vital in order to include participation of all of our citizens who now and in the future will enjoy the benefits of services provided by the county; and further it greatly strengthen local government so that local needs can be met through local action, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESLOVED THAT the Harnett County Commissioners in special session this 17th day of October, do wholeheartedly endorse the adoption of a one per cent sales tax for the county of Harnett, in concert with all other counties in the State of North Carolina, in order to provide for their citizens those improved services we so urgently need. FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED, THAT after careful and deliberate consideratiqkn of the needs next year of our school operations, and county general fund services, and based on conservative estimates of the revenues produced by such a sales tax in Harnett County, that all such needs known to ous at this time can be fully met without any anticipated increase in the tax rate of the county. RESOLVED FURTHER, THAT the Harnett County Board of Commissioners would enter into a pay -as- you -go program to upgrade the school system( and other services.
