HomeMy WebLinkAbout06041973MINUTE'S OF REGULAR MEETING OF JUNE 4, 1973. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Brock called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. and Rev. John Steele, pastor of Leaflet Presbyterian Church, offered the morning prayer. RES. FOR MRS. RAY As provided for in the May meeting of the Board, the following resol- ution was presented to Mrs. Mary B. Ray, in honor of member D. P. Ray, Jr., who passed away May 2, 1973: NORTH CAROLINA HARNETT COUNTY THAT WHEREAS, our friend and fellow Commissioner, Duncan Patterson Ray, Jr., was called from our midst on May 2, 1973; and WHEREAS, Duncan P. Ray, Jr. was a native son, was born on June 30, 1899, and obtained all formal education available to him in Harnett County at that time, and then completed his high school education at the Presbyterian Church School at Elise, North Carolina, now known as Robbins; and WHEREAS, Duncan P. Ray, Jr. served as County Commissioner from December 1968, when he was first elected, until his death, having been re- elected in 1972; and WHEREAS, Duncan P. Ray, Jr. made many outstanding contributions to County Government as Commissioner, as Tax Collector from 1948 until 1964 and as Deputy Clerk of Superior Court from 1939 until 1948; and WHEREAS, Duncan P. Ray, Jr. had served on the Board of Deacons of Leaflet Presbyterian Church in Western Harnett and was serving at the time of his death as a Ruling Elder; and WHEREAS, Duncan P. Ray, Jr. was active in many other activities, to include membership in the Harnett County Historical Society, Director of and Appraiser for Home Savings and Loan Association, and farmer; and WHEREAS, he was active for over half a century in the political life of Harnett County having served his political party of birth and choice, the Democratic Party, in many capacities and was the County Campaign Manager for the late Governor William B. Umstead; and WHEREAS, Duncan P. Ray, Jr. was a devoted family man and was married on the 28th day of January, 1939, to the former Mary Ballard of Harnett County; and WHEREAS, he was a man of keen intelligence, sharp wit and good humor and a Christian gentleman in his private and public affairs; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners, in its regular session assembled on June 4, 1973, as follows: 1. That each member of the Board of County Commissioners of Harnett County feels a deep personal loss from the passing of their distinguished Vice - Chairman, Duncan P. Ray, Jr. 2. That each member of the Board wishes to express and does hereby express appreciation and thanks for the full,active, and meaningful involvement of Duncan P. Ray, Jr. in the life of his community. 3. That each member of the Board does hereby extend to his widow, Mary B. Ray, his deepest sympathy. 4. That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of this June 4, 1973 meeting; and that the Clerk to the Board be and he is hereby directed to send a copy of this resolution to his widow, Mary B.
