HomeMy WebLinkAbout04242001HARNETT COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Minutes of Special Meeting (Joint Meeting with Board of Education) April 24, 2001 The Harnett County Board of Commissioners met in joint session with the Harnett County Board of Education on Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in the County Administration Building, 102 East Front Street, Lillington, North Carolina. • Members present: Teddy J. Byrd, Chairman Beatrice Bailey Hill, Vice Chairman Dan B. Andrews Tim McNeill Walt Titchener Staff present: Neil Emory, County Manager Wm. A. (Tony) Wilder, Assistant County Manager Kay S. Blanchard, Clerk to the Board Board of Education members present: Harrington Morrison, Chairman Ronny Holmes Craig Matthews Billy B. Tart Board of Education staff present: Donald Andrews, Superintendent Neil Tilley, Finance Officer Tammy Howington, Assistant Finance Officer Sylvia Wallace, Administrative Assistant Chairman Byrd called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and offered the invocation. • Chairman Morrison called the Board of Education meeting to order and called on Mr. Andrews for presentation of Harnett County Schools' FY 2001-2002 proposed budget. After the proposed budget presentation, the two boards discussed the need for additional school facilities. The Board of Commissioners directed County Manager Neil Emory to move ahead to develop financing for a new elementary school in the Shawtown- Lillington area and a new high school. Chairman Byrd opened the meeting for comments from the public. Comments were offered by the following citizens: Wayne Farrar, representing the Children'`s Education Development Alliance (CEDA), addressed three items: - A new high school should be located beside Overhills Elementary School. - Concerns about current overcrowding at Western Harnett High School - Should be equity in County school facilities without regard to race, economy, or side of the river. Deborah Hales Thomas stressed there should be equity in school facilities and • supplies such as books. Jane Susavich suggested that a new high school should be located beside Overhills Elementary School. There being no further business, Chairman Byrd and Chairman Morrison adjourned the Kay S. lanchard, Clerk to the Board
