DEAR SIR:
THE ABOVE REFERENCED NEW RESIDENCE IS BEING CONSTRUCTED UNDER
YOUR BUILDING APPLICATION #17-50041557.
BASED UPON MY PREVIOUS SITE VISITS AND INSPECTIONS, OF THE PRE-
ENGINEERED WOOD ROOF AND FLOOR TRUSSES, I FOUND THE ELECTRICAL
CONTRACTOR HAD DRILLED HOLES IN A NUMBER OF TRUSSES TO
FACILLITATE HIS WIRE PLACEMENT.
DRILLING HOLES IN PRE-ENGINEERED WOOD TRUSSES IS A VIOLATION OF THE
NORTH CAROLINA STATE RESIDENTIAL BUILDING CODE. ALTERATIONS OF THE
TRUSSES COMPROMISES THEIR STRUCTURAL INTERCITY.
TO CORRECT THIS, I DIRECTED THE CONTRACTOR TO PLACE METAL TYPE
TRUSS PLATES ON EACH SIDE OF THE "DRILLED HOLES" ON EACH SIDE OF THE
TRUSS MEMBER. THE PLATES ARE TO BE PERPENDICULAR TO THE WOOD
GRAIN OF THE TRUSS MEMBER THAT WAS ALTERED.
ON EACH SIDE OF THE STAIRWAY TO THE SECOND FLOOR, THE BOTTOM
CHORD HAS BEEN DRILLED NEAR THE END OF EACH TRUSS. THE STAIRWAY
WALL UNDER EACH FLOOR TRUSS IS PROVIDING ADDITIONAL BEARING
LENGTH FOR EACH TRUSS. I DO NOT BELIEVE THESE TWO TRUSSES HAVE
BEEN STRUCTURALLY COMPROMISED.
SUBSEQUENTLY, I REVISITED THE ABOVE REFERENCED CONSTRUCTION SITE
AND OBSERVED THE CORRECTIVE WORK THE CONTRACTOR WAS
PREVIOUSLY DIRECTED TO PERFORM. A COUPLE OF PLATES ON ONE SIDE OF
THE TRUSS MEMBER WAS MISSING DUE TO A"FIELD CONDITION".
I, THEREFORE, CERTIFY THAT ALL OF THE ALTERED TRUSSES ARE NOW SAFE
AND ARE STRUCTURALLY ADEQUATE TO SUPPORT ALL LOADING AS
REQUIRED BY THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE RESIDENTIAL BUILDING CODE.
