Born Herbert Watson Thomas on April 6, 1923 in the Barbecue Township of Harnett County. When NASCAR (National Association for Stock Auto Car Racing) first began racing in 1949, Herb was there, and help to pioneer the sport which it is today. He soon became a local and national racing legend always calling Olivia home. Herb passed away on August 9 of 2000. Here are a few highlights of his career; 48 NASCAR wins, three time Darlington 500 winner, two time Grand National Champ. Thomas was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame in 1965, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994 and in 2013 was inducted to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. We believe this honor to be deserving of this individual for what all he accomplished during his career. He still has friends, family and relatives living in the area, but as the years pass the numbers decrease . He was truly a man of honor and integrity who stayed true to his roots. If I can assist in any way or if more information is needed I will gladly do so. Thank you for your time and consideration. Mike Thomas email; ttom2795@windstream .net Ph. 919 499 2795
