Miller & Associates, PA (DMA) visited the subject site for the purpose of observing the subsurface conditions and materials for the proposed residential crawl space foundation with respect to bearing capacity. It was observed during the site visit, that the proposed footing areas were generally excavated approximately 8 to 10 inches below the existing ground surface, with the exception of the two locations shown on Figure 1 of the attached Project Time Record (PTR) dated September 25, 2009 which were excavated approximately 5 feet below the existing ground surface. The materials exposed consisted of firm, orange, coarse - grained, silty-sand free of debris and significant quantities of organics and water. The materials were identified by means of visual observation, qualitative probing, and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing (refer to Figure I on the attached PTR dated September 25, 2009 for locations and details). The DCP test results are as follows. DCP Test Range of Blow Counts Test Depth Below Test Depth Below Bottom Location Per Increment (bpi) Ground Surface (ft.) of Excavation (ft.) Rear Right 15+ 0.67 to 0.83 0 Corner 15+ (HAR) 1.17 to 1.33 0.5 (6 in.) HAR = Hand Auger Refusal It is recommended that the two overexcavated locations be backfilled with clean washed stone wrapped in a geotextile filter fabric to the planned bearing elevation. Based on our visual observations, recommendations, and field test results; the tested materials and conditions are suitable for the support of an assumed bearing pressure of 2,000 psf. The concrete and reinforcing steel (if needed) should be placed within 24 hours. If this is not possible, the condition of the excavations should be preserved by means of placing a concrete mudmat or plastic sheeting to cover all footing areas. If foundation excavations are exposed to the elements or if changes are made to the foundation excavations; it is recommended to retest the footings for suitability to support anticipated loading conditions. The revised document included significant changes to the addendums associated with fire testing; The following is a summary of the changes: 1. The six materials identified in flue IRC and the IBC as acceptable prescriptive ignition barriers for attics and crawl spaces remain valid for the foreseeable future, 2. The changed addendum eliminated the use of the Attic and Crawl Space Test commonly identified as the Southwest Research Institute (Swill) 99 -02 Crawl Space Test used to qualify the foam insulation for use in attics and crawl spaces. This inchtded both the original 99-02 test using the haft faced fiberglass baseline and the interim 3 minute/12 minute criteria tests adopted on hme 1, 2008. The use of ESRs using these tests as justification for the spraying of foam in attics and crawl spaces without a prescriptive ignition barrier expire on June 1, 2009 and January 1, 2010 respectively. 3. The Generic Comparative Room Conner test using plywood prescriptive ignition barrier as a baseline is valid until January 1, 2011 for attics. The NFPA 286, UL 1715 and the LJSC 26 -03 test standards are the acceptable criteria for the performance of this test. 4. The SwR199 -02 Crawl Space Test using a prescriptive plywood ignition barrier baseline will continue to be valid for crawl spaces for the foreseeable future. 5. Any testing using the NFPA 286, UL 1715 or UBC 26-3 test standards that passes the 15 minute thermal battier criteria will remain valid for the foreseeable future. Om SE4LECT Oti 500 and Blaxelok TIP" meets the criteria identified in the MC and IBC as an interior finish without a thermal barrio and will remain valid 6. The Modified NFPA 286 Room Corner Test as identified in Appendix X was adopted on lime 3, 2009 and will be the only approved test for the spraying of attics without a prescriptive ignition barrier after January 1, 2011. This test is somewhat similar to the NFPA 286 test used in the Generic Comparative Room Corner test identified above except it will not require a second baseline test to be performed; instead, it will use a time of 4 minutes; 18 seconds as a specific pass/fail point. This time was derived through extensive research using the plywood baseline assembly under various burs regiments. This test further describes specific details on the construction of the test assembly, application of the foam and the placement of the burner unit. It further defines the burner output (40 Kilowatt) for the first 5 minutes of the teat as well as the various data points used to determine the pass/fail point, The most significant requirement of this testis the feet that if a coating or covering is used on any part of the foam, It must be applied at the same thickness to all the exposed foam. At this point in time, we have not tested to the Appendix X criteria end do not know what the requirement for the use of intumescent coatings will be on our foams after the January 1, 201 ldate. 2923 GALLERIA DRIVE ' ARLINGTON, TX 76011 • PHONE: (817) 640 -4900 • FAX: (817)633.2000 Webatte: hop;/ /www.damilecusaeom • &nmi1: loth @dcm+lecusa.com I • I 41• ! Please review the attached Test protocol Summary for specific dates associated with both test submission and compliance effective dates. Demilec (USA) LLC has completed testing of our SEALECTION 500, Agribalencs and Headok Soy* in accordance with the Generic Comparative Room Corner test identified in item 3 above and are compliant with al► AC 377 criteria until January 1, 2011. All three foams require the use of an intumescent coating on the vertical surfaces only. The foam may be left exposed and the use of the intumescent is not required on the underside of the roof deck or the underside of the floor above a crawl space. A prescriptive ignition barrier is not required. We have provide the testing information to the ICC -ES for updating/revision of our ESRs 1172 and 2600 as well es 1APM0 for the Evaluation Report 0123 and all three will be issued in the very near future. There tends to be much confusion over these changes with many applicators claiming various foams will require coating of all surfaces after this year. This point may be true for some of the foams an the market; however, it is NOT true of Demilec's foams. Anyone desiring additional information on the development of the new AC377 criteria, please contact me via e-mail end I will provide a copy of the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance's (SPFA) presentation on the development of the new test criteria as well as a Question and Answer docimtent that resulted from a national viideo/teleconferenco of the presentation. The evaluation service report is a document issued by the International Code Council (ICC) confirming hat I g cynene meets the intent of the building codes. The ICC evaluation service has verified through third party testing and ongoing quality control procedures that our product is coda compliant. ROW TO USE THE ESR The Icynene ICC -ES report is evidence that we have tested, passed and been approved by the highest code authority. Building code officials are the primary users of this report along with architects, plan reviewers, permit issuers and specification writers. Showing Icynene's ICC -ES report to these groups is both our proof and theirs that Icynene meets the intent of the codes and can be approved with confidence by the above parties. Similar cts not having 1 ing an ICC-ES report have not gone through these testing and quality control procedures and may not comply with the codes: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ICYNENE ES REPORT Compliance up to and including the most recent building codes: 2006 International Residential Code (IRC), 2006 International Energy Conservation Code, and 2006 International Building Code. !, I flat. Surface Burning Characteristics The International Residential Code, International Building Code and the International Energy Conservation Code all require foam plastics to have a flame spread of less than 75 and a smoke developed of less than 450. Icynenets numbers are QO flame spread and <400 smoke developed, qualifying Icynene as a Class A or Class 1 insulation and permitting us A greater acceptance. • Thermal Resistance . We now have an R-value table on the last page of the report taking the guesswork out of thermal values at a determined thickness. R- ' values are tested at both a 1 inch and 3,5 inches thickness. The number generated at the 3.5 inch thickness is then used to calculate Revalues at all thicknesses, including the final recorded 1 inch value, This prevents manufactures from testing at I inch thick only; which is usually the best result, and can lead people into inaccurately assuming that multiplying the 1 inch R -value number by the number of installed inches will give them and accurate number for the total installed R- value. Mr Peeance When tested to the ASTM E283 air permeance criteria, Icynene is [ .02 L/S/M which qualifies us as an air barrier material. This qualifying air barrier result is a requirement for the unvented attic and crawl space applications. The ICC-ES reports no longer list the actual test number. Intumescent Coatings • Only applicable in the unvented attic and crawl space assemblies. • Underside of roof deck need not be covered. • Underside of floor in a crawl space need not be covered. • Vertical walls in the unvented attic and crawl space that are sprayed at less than 3.5 inches need not be covered. • Vertical walls in unvented attic and crawl space assemblies that are sprayed greater than 3.5 inches need to be covered with either Aldocoat 757 or SafecoatTM Latex coating. • Pirefree 88; if used, needs to cover all sprayed surfaces in the unvented attic or crawl space assembly. • Firefree 88 is approved as a vapor barrier. 63 / :':.•.. cv v -'•" 96826435 EASTERN IN SULATION PHIL 86/18 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ICYNENE ES REPORT cont. [adh AtticQ f assembly where the floor f the attic used s insulated, up to 10 inches thick. attic Sill Plate/Rim Joist Icynene can be installed in the cavities created by the sill plate, floor framing and rim joists to a maidrnum of 3.5 inches without a'thermal barrier. Fire Rated Wall Assemblies Icynene has 2 fire rated wall systems approved as 1 hour rated partition wall assemblies. Please see the ES report for details; Floor Assembly Icynene has a 1 hour fire rated floor /ceiling assembly, please see ES report for details. • IMPORTANT - NOTE Due to the extensive fire testing on our product our ICC -ES report does not contain the restriction of "no beat emitting appliances" in our approved unvented attic or crawlspace, assemblies. This is important because "no heat emitting appliances" can include furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters. Many foams with an ICC- ES evaluation report have this "no heat emitting appliances" restriction in their ES' reports under unvented attic assemblies and crawlspaces. Older building codes are also Iisted in the ES report including the 20031RC, IBC and I,ECC, as well as the 1999 BOCA, SEC and L1BC. This means whatever code a state uses, Icynene complies. For example In Wisconsin, R- values of 49 are prescribed in attics. In order to provide more realistic evaluations of insulation systems, Oak Ridge National Laboratories developed a large scale, attic climate simulator that could provide data on how etfidently insulation systems rated R- values matched up to more real life performance. In July 2005, SPFA contracted with R &D Services to test Iow density SPF as well as 2Ib density SPF In the attic thermal performance climate simulator at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories. The SPF assemblies were compared to a typical blown -in fiberglass insulation attic application. All three attic insulation systems were tested for both Winter and Summer Conditions. The thermal test section has dimensions 8x8 R. and area of 64 ft'. Loose-fill fiberglass applied in attic (depth 14 in.) Low - density foam applied between floor rafters on the underside of the roof deck (depth 5.5 M.) Medium (2. b) density barn applied between the rafters on the underside of the roof deck (depth 4.0 in.) Results: The test results demonsbate that both low density and medium (2 Ib) density SPF installed to the underside of the roof deck in attic assemblies maintain a much higher effective R -vacua at both low and high temperatures than the fiberglass insulation system. The SPF systems maintained 7434 and 83% respectively of reported Ft-value at Iow outside temperatures compared to 48% for 0* fiberglass assembly, and 61% and 67% of reported R -value at high outside temperature compared to 51% for the fiberglass assembly. (Table 1) Attic temperatures of Iow density and medium density SPF assemblies averaged 77 to 78 degrees F at high outside temperature and 60 — 61 degrees F at low outside temperature, compared to an average of 107 degrees at high outside temperature and 7 degrees at low outside temperature for the fiberglass assembly.
