Dear Mr. and Mrs. Williams,
A detailed soil investigation has been conducted at the above referenced property, located
on the northern side of Rodeo Lane off of McDougald Road (SR 1229) in the Upper Little River
Township of Harnett County, North Carolina. The purpose of the investigation was to determine
the ability of this property to support a subsurface sewage waste disposal system and repair area
for a typical three-bedroom home. All soil ratings and determinations were made in accordance
with "Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems, 15A NCAC 18A .1900". It
is our understanding that public water supplies will be utilized at this site.
A portion of this property was investigated and two areas were found to be underlain by
usable soil types. At the front of the property, an area was observed along the woods line that is
underlain by soils rated as provisionally suitable for subsurface sewage waste disposal. These
provisionally suitable soils are firm clays to greater than 24 inches and appear adequate to
support long term acceptance rates of 0.3 gal/day/sgft. An area of suitable and provisionally
suitable soils was observed along the northeastern property boundary that appears adequate to
support the required repair area at least twice (see attached map). It is possible that one or two
additional small areas of usable soils exist along the northern property boundary, but the
remainder of the tract is likely unsuitable for septic waste disposal. The distance and stream
crossings make the area of high quality soil desirable only for future repairs.
It appears that the usable soils at the front of the property are adequate to support the
initial septic system. Figure 1 shows the septic system layout, but a site meeting with the health
department or myself may be necessary at the time of installation. The system is proposed as
approximately 400 feet of accepted status (EZ flow) drainline as one line (serial distribution). A
swale is proposed upslope from the drainfield to divert surface water away. It is encouraged that
you maintain and protect this Swale, as it may be very important for the life expectancy of the
drainfield. The upper portion of the drainfield has higher quality soil and ditch bottom depths can
be 18 inches below surface. This would include the top five lines. However, the remainder of
the drainfield will need to be installed with ditch bottom depths at 12 inches below ground
surface. This will necessitate the addition of six inches of topsoil to completely cover the
drainlines.

Figure 1. Initial System layout
It may be possible to use some of the soil material from the swale to cover the drainlines.
The installer you select may choose to add the soil capping prior to installing the drainlines, and
if carefully done is recommendable. The addition of topsoil will subtly alter the topography of
the drainfield and therefore the layout of the system. It is likely that the required length of
drainlines can be installed in a slightly smaller area after the surface has been smoothed. Any
smoothing of the surface within the drainfield must be accomplished by adding fill material. The
existing surface should not be disturbed except by disking.
It is recommended that care be taken to preserve the life of your septic system. The
septic tank and distribution box should be kept accessible for pumping and adjustment. Your
septic system should be inspected periodically and the septic tank pumped out every 5 years by a
professional contractor. Practicing water conservation in the home, such as promptly repairing
leaky fixtures and running washing machines and dishwashers only when full, will help to avoid
overloading the septic system. Also, disposal of oils, fats, and grease into the septic system
should be avoided because they could clog drainlines and conveyance pipes. A list of other
useful suggestions is attached for your use.
I appreciate the opportunity to provide this service and hope to be allowed to assist you
again in the future. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me
at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Awxt-—
Hal Owen
