The purpose of this investigation was to determine the site's ability to support a repair subsurface sewage waste disposal system for your home. All sewage disposal ratings and determinations were made in accordance with "Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems, 15A NCAC 18A .1900 ". This report represents my professional opinion as a Licensed Soil Scientist but does not guarantee or represent permit approval for any lot by the local Health Department. An improvement permit will need to be obtained from the Health Department that provides the specifics for your wastewater system. A double wide manufactured home exists near the center of the subject property and utilizes a septic system that is installed in "Easement No. 2 ". That system appeared to be functioning properly, and adequate space appears to be available within the easement area to replace the system if needed. However, additional area to provide another easement does not appear to be readily available. The new home that you propose to occupy at the site is located at the front of the lot and above an existing septic system that was once utilized by an old home that was previously located at the property but has been removed. It is my understanding that the existing system was functioning properly when the house was removed and that you expect it to continue to function in the future for your home. No evidence of past failures or stresses was observed at the site. A soil investigation was conducted in the vicinity of the old house (removed) and the soils were observed to be adequate for conventional septic systems that are installed ultra shallow. A layer of topsoil would be needed to cover the entire drainfield area if repairs are required in this area. This area may not be large enough for a complete replacement of your septic system as the soils are heavy clays and will require a significant amount of drainline. Soil Science Investigations • Wetland Delineations, Permitting, and Consulting HAL OWEN & ASSOCIATES, INC. The soils in the western corner of this property were observed to be adequate for innovative or experimental systems, such as subsurface drip systems or more conventional drainlines preceded by a pre - treatment filter. These soils were observed to be firm clays to greater than 18 inches and appear adequate to support Iong term acceptance rates of 0.75 gal /day /sgft for anaerobic subsurface drip systems. Although significantly expensive to design and install, these type systems appear available for your use in repairing the existing system if it should fail. You may need to have the property lines more clearly marked before the health department will allow you to proceed. It is recommended that you request that the health department allow you to utilize the existing system that is present at the property. It should also be your understanding that future repairs or replacement of the existing system will likely be significantly expensive. I appreciate the opportunity to provide this service and trust that you will feel free to call on me again in the future.
