'The Board of County`-Commissioners of Harnett County met in a.regular session
Monday April 5, 1937„ with J.B.Ennis,. Chairman, and J.S.Barker, Angus A.Cameron,
Geo.T.Noe] and Lonnie Byrd present. Also H.C.Strickland, County Attorney was
present.
It is ordered that the tax valuation of the residence of Paul L.Strickland in
the town of Dunn be placed at $2200.00 for the year 1936. '
It is ordered that E.V.Barefoot, Grove Township, be relieved of poll tax for
the years 1935 and 1936, on account ofbeing a disabled World War Veteran.
It is ordered that beer license be granted W.G.Massengill of Duke Township.
It is ordered that D.C.Marks of Johnsonville Township be relieved of poll
tax for the year 1936 because of disability.
It is ordered that D.C.Marks of Johnsonville Township be granted free pedd1sfl license for the year 1937 because of disability.
It is ordered that L.F.West of Duke Township, be granted free peddler's license
for the year 1937.
It is ordered that L.F.West be relieved of poll tax for the year 1936.
It is ordered that S.G.Davis of Upper Little River Township be- granted free
peddler's license for the year 1937 on account of being a disabled World War
Veteran.
It-is ordered that C.H.Avery of Erwin be allowed 440.00 for patrolling highway
through the town of Erwin during the school term 1936 - 1937.
It is ordered that Geo.T.Noel and J.S.McLean be appointed as Committee to
investigate the tax vaulation of property of O.P.Shell in Averasboro Township.
It is ordered that the tax suits pending against Chas. Ross et als relating
to the Arnold house and lot in Lillington on 10th. Street, together with other
taxes due thereon in 1926 and other.years to and including taxes for the year
1935, due Harnett County, be settled for 11014.16,_ if paid during April, 1937,
and upon such payment a non -suit will be taken by the County.
Mrs. W.A.Brown, of Olivia, N.C., appeared before the Board and on behalf of
the people within one mile of the station lodged a protest to the granting of
license to sell beer within that radius to any person, and it was ordered that
in the event of an application being made to the Board forbbeer license by any
person within a radius of. one mile of the station at Olivia, that Mrs. W.A.Brown
of Olivia, be notified, so that. she may be heard.
It is ordered that the Modern Steam Laundry and the Dunn Family Laundry be
asked to submit bids for the laundry at the County Home and Jail for the period
from first Monday in May 1937 to first Monday in December, 1938.
It is ordered that A.J.Matthews of Grove Township be allowed 56.31 for the
care of Grady Wilson, provided that from said amount A.J.Matthews shall pay
436.31 covering tax delinquent against him.
A delegation" from the;Benhaven school appearing before the Board -to inquire
if the Board would. providefunds to establish a department of Home Economics in
that school and to °pay one -half the cost of a teacher and travel expense.
The Board unanimously expressed themselves as favoring the idea, and
expressed willingness to provide equipment for such a department costing not
more than $600.00; one -half salary of teacher not exceeding $625. ( as County's
part), and_ travel_expenses not exceeding 11'150., the same to be put in the budget
for next fiscal year.
The Board ordered that fire insurance for a three -year period be placed
through James Best for $10,000. on New Agricultural Building, and 41000. on the
equipment therein.
The Board ordered that fire insurance for a."" three -year period be placed
through W.H.Stephenson for 419,000. on the courthouse.
The following road petition was approved by the Board and ordered forwarded
to State Highway and Public Works Commission: (1) beginning at a point on the
old Lillington -Dunn road near the old County Home and following the old McAlister
road to N.C.Route No. 21 near Harnett Church a distance of about 6 miles in
Lillington 7Ownship, Harnett County, N.C.
G.D.Woodley, an attorney appeared before the Board and asked that he be
exempted from the payment of $2.00 poll tax on account of alleged disability
incurred in the World War. It was ordered that he be exempted of poll tax
for the year 1936.

WHEREAS, in connection with the PWA loan and grant depository arrangement
First- Citizens Bank & Trust Company, Dunn, N.C., secured the deposit of
approximately $60,000. of said funds of Harnett County by a deposit of certain
securities with Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, Raleigh, N.C.;
AND WHEREAS, the said funds so deposited by the County have been withdrawn
to the extent that there no longer exists any need for the said deposit of the
said securities:
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County
(1) That Wachovia Bank and Trust Compny, Raleigh, N.C. be, and it is hereby
authorized to release to First- itizens Bank and Trust Company, Dunn, N.C., the
following securities which were - deposited with said Wachovia Bank and Trust Co.
by First - Citizens Bank and Trust Company, to -wit:
$30,000. County of Gaston School Building Bonds, bearing interest at

Upon motion of Commissioner Geo.Noel, seconded by Commissioner Jno.S.Barker,
the foregoing Resolution was unanimously adopted, all Commissioners being present
and voting in the affirmative for its adoption.
This the 6 day of April, 1937.
BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County that the
State Highway and Public Works Commission be, and it is hereby memorialized to
construct an all- weather or hard surfaced road from a point one mile West of
Lillington (where now ends an oil treated part of the road) to Olivia, the route
being along the present "Johnsonville Road" via Clark's Bridge and Barbecue Church,
the total distance being approximately eighteen miles.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED' that it be made mown to the State Highway and Public
Works Commission that in the territory to be served by said proposed road there
is a large population without the benefit of ant..road)whidh carat be travelled in
wet weather, which territorty in part desired to became a part of Lee County
because of unsatisfactory road conditions now prevailing.
Unanimously adopted this the 5 day of April, 1937.
It is ordered that the report of W.D.Harrington, Tax Collector, be accepted
and filed.
It is ordered that report of Register of Deeds be accepted and filed.
The business before the meeting being unfinished, and five olclock P.M.
having arrived, a recess was taken until 10:00 A.M.Friday, April 9th. 1937.
