The Board of Commissioners met in a call session on Friday February 16, 1945
at 2 :00 p. M. with all members present. Also the County Attorney and the clerk to
the Board.
It was ordered that J. Earl Ward, Harnett County accountant, be and he here-
by is appointed and authorized to collect and receive County taxes which may be
pre -paid on the 1945 levy of Harnett County Taxes.
The Commissioners favored inacting into the law special legintation to authorize
the commissioners to levy taxes for specialpurposes and at the rates mentioned
below:
1. For Harnett County Veteran Service Officer -- 2¢
2. For Farm Agent and assistants, Home Demonstration and assistants - - -3¢
3. For County Accountant, All assistants, supplies, etc. 3¢
4. For Poor fund 10/
the Board favors the repealof the law requiring the Register of Deeds to pay
from her salary, her deputy. Repeal the law requiring the Clerk of Superior Court
tb pay from his salary, his deputy.
The members of the Board of County Commissioners are requesting tin repres-
entative in their behalf that the term of the office of the Harnett County Tax
Collector ran from June 30th each year to July 1, Beginning July 1, 1945. This
will save the necessity for an audit being made of the tax office at a time differ-
ent from that which the other officers are audited.
4ihe members of the Board favored repealing hhe law limiting the compensation of
the County Auditor. It also favored the inactment of a law giving them power and
authority to fix the compensation, and to pay all officers appointed by them, and
the employees of such officers, and to fix and regulate the compensation of em-
ployees of the Clerk of Superior Courl, Register of Deeds, and Sheriff of Harnett
County.
The members of the Board also were of opinion that the term of office of the
Register of Deeds and the Judge of the County Recorders Court should be extenddd
to the first Monday in December, 194E, and their term should thereafter be four years
each. They were also of opinion that there would be no objection to staggering
their terms of office as members of the Board of County Commissioners. The members
also favored a law permitting them to pay for each liquor still captured and bought
in the sum of $7,50, and for each man arrested and. charged with manufacture of li-
quors $15.00; and for authority to the sheriff and his deputies to adminither oaths;
and to fix the fees charged for arrests at a rate comprable with those in Johnston
or Wa :w County.
