12131957DECEMBER 13th. 1957 After written notice to each Commissioner dated December 9, 1957; and posting notice as required by law, which notices contained a statement of the purpose of said meeting, the Board of Commissioners met in special session at the courthouse at 10:00 a.m. on December 13, 1957. Chairman Tart, Commissioners Womble, Pleasant and Cameron, the Clerk and County Attorney were present. Upon motion of Commissioner Cameron, seconded by Commissioner Pleasant, the Board voted unanimously to accept the proposal of R. M. Turlington to re -roof the courthouse upontthe terms of said proposal at a cost of 81880, and authorized Chairman Tart to accept said proposal and exeeaute said Contract. Upon motion of Commissioner Pleasant, seconded by Commissioner Womble the Board voted unanimously to accept the proposal of R. M. Turlington to lower ceiling in courtroom upon terms contained in said proposal at cost of $2416.00 and authorized Chairman Tart to accept said proposal and execute Contract. Upon motion of Commissioner Womble, seconded by Commissioner Cameron, the Board adopted the following resolution by unanimous vote. WHEREAS, the Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company has recently filed with the North Carolina Utilities Commission a request to increase its rates in Harnett County and other sections. of Eastern North Carolina; and WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners for Harnett County are of the opinion that such increased rates are not necessary for the company to make reasonable profit and that they are in excess of those in comparable communities, and that such increased rates if granted would work a hardship upon all of the citizens of the County and that if such increase is granted it sould result in deterring industry from locating in the section of North Carolina served by the Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company and would result in an unfair and increased charge upon the citizens of Harnett County when incomes are declining. NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County that the North Carolina. Utilities Commission be and it is hereby requested and urged to thoroughly investigate said application for increased rates, having due regard for the hardship which said rate increase would impose upon the citizenship of Harnett County and eastern North Carolina; and Be it further resolved that this Board urges the North Carolina'Utilities Commission to deny said application and it is hereby directed that a copy of this resolution be furnished to the North Carolina Utilities Commission for its information and consideration.
