On February 24 and 25, 2010, a representative of D. Miller & Associates, PA (DMA) visited the
subject site for the purpose of observing the subsurface conditions and materials for the proposed residential
crawl space foundation with respect to bearing capacity. It was observed during the first site, that the proposed
footing areas were excavated approximately 12 to 18 inches below the existing ground surface. Standing water
and yielding soils were observed at isolated areas. It was recommended to overexcavate approximately 6 to 8
inches of yielding soils and standing water. During the second site visit, the DMA representative observed the
implementation of our recommendations. Standing water from the isolated areas of the footing was being
removed at the time of our site visit. The materials exposed at the bottom of the excavations consisted of firm,
orange- brown, medium grained silty sand to clayey sand, residual soils free of debris and significant quantities
of organics and water. DMA can conduct consolidation testing for the purpose of estimating swell potential, if
desired. The materials were identified by means of visual observation, qualitative probing, and Dynamic Cone
Penetrometer (DCP) testing (refer to Figure 1 on the attached Project Time Record dated February 24, 2010 for
locations and details). The DCP test results are as follows.

It is recommended that the overexcavated areas be backfilled with clean washed stone to the planned
footing bearing elevation prior to placing the concrete or backfilled with full depth concrete. Based on our
visual observations, recommendations and field test results, the tested materials and conditions are suitable for
the support of an assumed bearing pressure of 2,000 psf The concrete and reinforcing steel (if needed) should
be placed within 24 hours. If this is not possible, the condition of the excavations should be preserved by
means of placing a concrete mudmat or plastic sheeting to cover all footing areas. If foundation excavations
are exposed to the elements or if changes are made to the foundation excavations; it is recommended to retest
the footings for suitability to support anticipated loading conditions.
