Aiken, PE R6030 Creedmoor October 28, 2009 Ref: Highgrove Lot 58 - 367 Heathrow Dr. Concern has been raised regarding the placement of a 3" plumbing pipe hole closer than the manufacturers specified distance of 5-6" away from bearing points on the above referenced home. The placement of a hole in the web of the I-joist serves to reduce the Cross Sectional Area of the I-Joist, while the hole in the web has very little impact on the Section Modulus. The Section Modulus is the measure of a structural members ability to resist bending, and the Cross Sectional Area is a measure of a beams ability to resist shear. As the shear is typically zero at the center of a span and increases to its maximum value at the end of the span, any penetrations should be made in the middle third of the span. The manufactures literature assumes the worst case scenario (spans of approximately 16-6"), hence the 6-6" limit on penetrations from bearing points. On shorter spans, where bending and shear forces are significantly reduced, the 6-6" limit does not make since. One should only attempt to make penetrations in the middle Ille of the span. The design of most l joist is controlled by bending forces and the beams Section Modulus. In most conditions I-joist will approach the limit of its' bending capacity while only half of its' shear capacity will be utilized. The section modulus is very important in determining the capacity of a beam. The vast majority of the section modulus (bending resistance) for an 1 -joist is provided by the beams flange. Therefore, the flange of the I -joist should never be damaged. In the specific case of this home, a relatively small hole has been drilled toward the center of the span. As the above enclosed calculations indicate the only 1.9% of the shear capacity at the hole location is being utilized. Also, approximately''/. "of the bottom flange adjacent to the web has been drilled out. Although. only 11 % of the bending capacity of the beam is being utilized, I recommend that the bottom flange be reinforced with a 2' long Simpson metal strap installed at the bottom of the bottom flange.
