Ref: Highgrove Lots 77 - 395 Heathrow Dr.
Concern has been raised regarding the placement of an 8" HVAC dud closer than the manufacturers
specified distance of 5'-6" away from bearing points on the above referenced home. (joist
manufacturers specify this distance presuming that the l joist is at the maximum span and maximum
loading. This would suggest that on shorter spans (as in the 7' span in this case) that the placement of
any penetration would be impossible since it would be impossible to place a hole 5'-6" away from both
supports on a span less than 11'. Since the bending and shear forces are significantly less on shorter
spans, holes may be placed in these spans. Enclosed are calculations which address the specific (joist
in questions.
The as-built position of the HVAC duds on the Sage plan do not impact the structural performance of
the floor system.
Concern has also been raised regarding the placement of a 3 inch hole closer to the flange than the
manufacturers specified 1/8". Cutting the-web closer than 118" to the web is bad practice, even when
the I joist is only loaded as in this case to 60% of its design capacity. I therefore recommend that 3' x
'G" OSB be fastened to each side of the bottom flange centered on the 3" hole.
