Re: Building Pad Evaluation for Lot 53 Highgrove at Anderson Creek in Fayetteville, North Carolina

Dear Mr. Aiken,
ATC has visited the above referenced site to observe and evaluate soils for Lot 53 prior to construction.
At the time of our visit, building pad construction and footing excavation were complete.
Using a'/2 inch diameter steel probe rod and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer in accordance with ASTM
STP 399, AT.C tested soils at bottom of footing elevation. In addition ATC performed hand auger and DCP
testing at the four corners of the proposed building. ATC performed DCP testing at 1-foot intervals down to
satisfactory residual soils or a maximum depth of 5 feet below finish pad elevation.
Test results, at areas and elevations tested, indicated that soils have sufficient bearing capacity to
support a foundation designed for a net allowable bearing capacity of 2,000 pounds per square foot (pso,
with exception of the back left quadrant of the footing. Results indicated soft soils at the back left comer,
approximately 12 feet each direction. ATC recommended and observed the contractor remove 4 to 16
inches soft soils, tapering deeper towards the corner. The contractor placed extra concrete.

Scenic Homes
The area over the shower on the first floor bath is specified to be spanned with a 11-7/8" I-Joist. This
Joist was replaced with a 11-7/8" x 1-3/4" LVL which has been drilled with a 4" hole mid-span (total
span is 3').
Although it is not typically recommended that holes larger than 2" be cut in LVLs, the extremely short
span (3') results in the beam carrying approximately 1 % of its design capacity under the design loads of
10 psf Dead load and 40 psf Live load. I therefore recommend that no repair is required.
