Reference: Results of Footing Inspection
Dollar General Store

Dear Mr. Harris:
As requested, our personnel visited the above referenced site on June 11, 2009, in order to perform
a footing inspection. Our inspection consisted of random probing and performing six hand augered
soil borings with Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing per ASTM Special Publication T399.
Testing was performed at 1-foot intervals to refusal/termination depths of up to approximately 4 feet
below the bottom of footing (BOF) elevation. Inspections were performed at the following locations:
Continuous wall footings at the NE building corner, SE building corner, NW building corner, SW
building corner, 68' west of the NE building corner, and 68' west of the SE building corner. The
inspection locations are representative of the continuous wall footings for the entire building.
Based upon the soil conditions encountered at the time of inspection, it is our recommendation that
the non-performing unstable soils located from 35 feet north of the SE building corner to 35 feet
west of the SE building corner be over-excavated to a depth of 2 feet below existing bearing
elevations. Additionally the non-performing unstable soils located in the remainder of the perimeter
footings should either be 1.) over-excavated to a depth of 1 foot below existing bearing elevations or
2.) tamped and re-inspected prior to concrete placement. If the footings are to be over-excavated,
the resulting excavation bottoms should then be tamped and backfilled with properly compacted
structural fill, washed No. 57 stone, or concrete to near original bearing elevations. If soils are to be
used as the replacement material, they should be similar in composition to those removed (if
suitable) and be placed in 8 inch lifts, "loose measurement", and compacted in accordance with the
project specifications. If washed No. 57 stone is to be used, the stone should be placed in no more
than 10 to 12 inch lifts and tamped into the bottom and side-walls of the excavation. Upon
completion of the remedial recommendations, the footings should be suitable for the design bearing
capacity of 2500 pounds per square foot (psf). Our personnel should be present to document and
verify that the remedial activities have been completed prior to concrete placement.
The methods utilized to examine the bearing soils do not provide sufficient data for evaluation of
deeper soils within the zone of influence for the proposed structure. Additionally, regardless of the
thoroughness of this inspection, it is possible that the soil conditions intermediate of the test

locations vary from those at the test locations. Any loosened or disturbed surficial soils should be
removed from the footing bottoms prior to concrete placement. If the footings should become
saturated or filled with water, a re-inspection will be necessary prior to concrete placement.
