A RESOLUTION AMENDING THE HARNETT COUNTY ZONING ORDINANCE TEXT
WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners of Harnett County adopted a Zoning Ordinance on July 18, 1988
and June 5, 2000 for the purpose of promoting the health, safety, and general welfare of the county residents;
and
WHEREAS, this ordinance was adopted under authority granted by the General Assembly of the State of
North Carolina, particularly G.S. 153A -340; and
WHEREAS, the Zoning Ordinance contains provisions for amending said ordinance and those provisions
have been followed; and
WHEREAS, the Harnett County Planning Board has reviewed the amendment to Article X and Article 1X of
the Zoning Ordinance and recommends the adoption of the following amendment.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF HARNETT
COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA that Article X, Section 6.5, and Article IX, Section 10.4 & 10.7 of the
Zoning Ordinance be amended by deleting and replacing the text as follows:
Article X Section 6.5 Sign Size Requirements
Signs for retail and service, industrial, wholesale, Institutional and recreation facilities are
permitted as on- premise signs according to the following limitations:
(1) No sign shall project more that one (1) foot from any building wall.
(2) If suspended from under a canopy, the sign shall be not less than eight (8) feet above the
sidewalk, pavement or ground level.
(3) No sign shall be mounted on any roof nor shall any sign extend above any parapet wall. For
purposes of this Subsection, "roof' shal I mean that portion of the entire roof that covers the
enclosed portion of the structure.
(4) Maximum Display Area, number, height requirements for Ground and Wall signs:
1. Single tenant
a. Ground Signs
i. One (1) sign per street front, not to exceed two (2) per project
ii. Maximum area of 100 square feet per side if project is less than one
acre, 150 square feet per side if project is more than one acre
iii. Maximum Height of 25 feet
iv. Minimum distance between signs is 300 feet, minimum distance
does not apply to adjacent property
b. Wall Signs
i. Maximum three (3) walls may have signs
ii. Maximum square footage for sign area shall not exceed the total
linear feet of the wall to which the sign(s) is attached
2. Multi -tenant and Shopping Complex locations
a. Ground Signs
i. One (1) sign per street front, not to exceed two (2) per project or
Shopping complex
ii. Maximum area of 100 square feet per side if project is less than one
acre, 150 square feet per side if project is more than one acre
iii. Maximum Height of 25 feet
iv. Minimum distance between signs is 300 feet, minimum distance
does not apply to adjacent property
b. Wall Signs
i. Maximum square footage for sign area shall not exceed the total
linear feet of the store front
3. Office Buildings
a. Ground Sign
i. One (1) sign per street front, not to exceed two (2) per project
ii. Maximum area of 100 square feet per side if project is less than one
acre, 150 square feet per side if project is more than one acre
iii. Maximum Height of 25 feet
iv. Minimum distance between signs is 300 feet, minimum distance
does not apply to adjacent property
b. Wall Sign
i. Maximum three (3) walls may have signs
ii. Maximum square footage for sign area shall not exceed the total
linear feet of wall to which the sign(s) is attached
4. Non - residential subdivisions
a. Ground Signs
i. One (1) sign per entrance
ii. Maximum area of 150 square feet per side
iii. Maximum Height of 25 feet
iv. Individual parcels within development shall be permitted one(1)
ground sign
a. Maximum height 12 feet
b. Maximum area of 75 square feet per side
b. Wall Signs
i. Refer to sections 6.5.4.1, 6.5.4.2, and 6.5.4.3 above
5. Institutional locations
a. Ground Signs
i. One (1) sign per street front, not to exceed two (2) per project
ii. Minimum distance between sign is 300 feet, minimum distance does
not apply to adjacent properties
iii. Maximum area of 75 square feet per side
iv. A portion of the total sign area may be used for changeable copy
v. Maximum Height of 12 feet
In. Wall Signs
i. Maximum three (3) walls may have signs
ii. Maximum square footage for sign area shall not exceed the total
linear feet of the wall to which the sign(s) is attached
(5) Any sign painted on a building wall shall meet all applicable requirements of this section.
Article IX Section 10.0 Business And Instittutional Signs
Business signs shall be permitted on the premises of the business in districts in which the
principal use is permitted and in districts in which the principal use is conditional. Conditional Use
permit applications shall include information as to sign type and placement. All business signs shall be
subject to the following limitations:
10.1 Signs for customary home occupations shall not exceed six (6) square feet in display
area
10.2 Business signs shall not project more than one (1) foot from any building wall or
canopy.
10.3 If suspended from a canopy, the sign must be at least eight (8) feet above the
sidewalk, pavement or ground level.
10.4 Maximum Display Area, number, height requirements for Ground and Wall signs:

i. One (1) sign per street front, not to exceed two (2) per project
ii. Maximum area of 100 square feet per side if project is less than one
acre, 150 square feet per side if project is more than one acre

10.5 Free standing business signs shall not be located in a required side yard or within ten
(10) feet of the right -of -way line or any property line.
10.6 Display lighting of signs shall be shielded so as to prevent the direction of such light
into any structure used primarily for residential purposes. No intermittent lighting
effects shall be permitted on signs.
10.8 Business signs along interstate highways shall be required to meet the following
provisions:
a. The maximum size of the display area of business signs along Interstate
Highways, including 1 -95, shall not exceed a maximum total display area of
1,000 square feet.
b. Free standing business signs along Interstate Highways, including 1 -95, shall
be limited in height to 125 feet, measured from ground level to the highest
part of the sign structure.
C. Except as provided in subsections a. and b. above, the remaining provisions
of the Zoning Ordinance of Harnett County, where applicable, govern
business signs along Interstate Highways.
